MSNBC.com linking to other news sites

MSNBC.com has added a little module to its homepage called NewsTracker.

This area of the homepage provides stories about the election from other online news sites — including competitors such as Fox News Channel.

At this time, it seems NewsTrack is only for political news. It’s also interesting to note that NewsTracker is, while be placed on the homepage, not receiving a lot of fanfare so one wonders if it’s a sort of experiment for NBC.

This is an example of the term “link journalism“: a fairly new term that means just what it sounds like: reporting the news by linking to other sites. Along with citizen journalism, link journalism is poised to become another key, if not controversial, part of online news.
