ABC News launches Windows 8 app

ABC News has released a Windows 8 version of its app.

The new offering is designed for Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system, available for all laptops, desktops and the Windows 8 Surface tablet.

The Windows app joins the network’s suite of apps for iOS devices that offer videos, photos and breaking news coverage.

The ABC News Windows 8 App, which is free, is available now.

The new offering includes exclusive digital sections just for Windows 8 users.

Similar to the apps for iOS, the ABC News Windows 8 App features three editions — AM, Midday and Evening.

While the AM edition includes more stories and articles, the App’s Evening edition focuses primarily on videos and picture slideshows.

“ABC News continues to evolve and adapt to consumer demands in this ever-changing digital age,” said Doug Vance, ABC News vice president of product development, in a statement issued by the netowrk. “The ABC News Windows 8 App offers the same customized, personal news experience already available on iPad and Android devices. We are extending the reach of ABC News and have made our content even more accessible to a new and growing digital audience.”

The new app is optimized to take full advantage of Microsoft’s  new operating system. A continuous horizontal scroll provides tablet users with an intuitive way to browse the day’s top stories and videos with a simple swipe.

ABC has also integrated breaking news alerts and bulletins into the Live Tiles feature, making these notifications available even when the app is not in use. Snap View, a feature that allows users to ‘snap’ up their favorite story categories is also avaialble.

Users can also pin their favorite programs to Microsoft’s new start screen for easy, instant access to content.’

  • Lifestyle and Fun: A roundup of the day’s most interesting and useful features
  • Trending Stories: A roundup of the hottest topics and tweeted trends
  • More Day-Parted Content: A collection of featured stories and videos available to users, optimized for specific times of day
