Shot by shot: New ‘Nightly’ leans even more on video walls for storytelling

Standing near anchor desk

The studio’s smaller sized anchor desk also appears in some of the wide push in shots, with Holt starting standing to the far right of the desk, walking forward in front of the desk while the camera pushes in to frame the shot as a more traditional OTS, with the anchor become a sort of credenza.

These shots are notable in that they include Holt’s empty chair and his scripts and coffee mug laid out on the anchor desk.

In these shots, the gold underlines and white vertical accents are also used prominently.

Closing shot

The north video wall also plays a prominent role in the show’s closing after the kicker, when the director cuts back to Holt in the studio just before the package ends.

Viewers then see Holt, turned to the side, watching the story before turning to face the camera and signing off as the package video disappears in favor of the “Nightly” logo.

In this shot, the logo appears to the left of a gentle curve of a stylized, pixellated globe that is inspired by the rest of the show’s graphics package, though the color is a bit brighter.

The curve of the globe, meanwhile, is very dramatic and also has a visual connection to the feather shape found in the NBC logo.
