Scripps selects Axis for stations

Posted by Michael P. Hill | 3 responses

scripps1Scripps Broadcasting has rolled out Chryon’s Axis system at four stations, with the group’s remaining ones to follow.

So far, WEWS-TV in Cleveland, WPTV-TV in West Palm Beach, Fla., KSHB-TV in Kansas City, Mo. and WCPO-TV in Cincinnati have been upgraded to the new system, which uses a shared brown, red and gold graphics package.

Scripps has built a graphics facility at WFTS-TV in Tampa, Fla., which will serve as the hub of the group’s graphics operations.

The new graphics package makes use of a color scheme not seen very often in television news, a good strategy to help make the stations stand out more. The look draws heavily on 3D, transparent ribbons and curled panels as well as bursts of light that give the look a warm yet modern feel. Subtle accents of a maroon-red add a nice sense of urgency to the look and help keep things from looking too muddy.

The package also makes use of larger typefaces in a clear font. In some places, however, the type seems a bit too large, but does translate well to Web video and likely is a hit with smaller-screen viewers.

WEWS has yet to change to the new graphics. Just take a look at their weather forecast - http://images.ibsys.com/nn5/images/weather/auto/5dayforecast_640×480.jpg.

People have very mixed feelings about the graphics in Kansas City. KSHB has done a redish-orange package before 7 to 8 years ago and people didn’t like it then. Red and orange are not well liked colors in the market. People much prefer blue and red. Some people also feel that the graphics are way to big and need to be “shrunk” a little bit. Overall, you either like them or you don’t.
