MSNBC.com has rolled out some changes to its Web site, including a slightly modified graphical look and a dynamic new layout for story pages.

FoxNews.com rolls out new design

Via WebNewser, Fox News has rolled out a new site with clean styling to compete with CNN and MSNBC.

The site is a change for Fox News, as its last site used text layered on images and was very cluttered. The new site is very clean and overall is a good redesign, on par with CNN and MSNBC.

One unique feature of the site is the ability to embed a Adobe Flash news ticker into any site. Is this a gimmick? Maybe, but I bet some sites will find it useful.

CNN tops Yahoo News for top online news site

ComScore, an online metering and metrics company, has released new numbers which puts CNN.com ahead of Yahoo News in its “General News” category for the first time. During the month of May, CNN’s network of news sites saw 75 million unique vistors compared to Yahoo News’s 53 million. MSNBC ranked third with just over 50 million and CBS News ranked fifth.

ComScore recently changed its ranking system, which may have lead to the change on top.

ComScore just switched the way it measures Web media in way that favors CNN. Previously, it used the “panel method” only - it put software on volunteers’ computers to track their Web activity and extrapolated.

In May, ComScore switched to the “UDM Method,” which combines panel data with “a unique census-level data collection method.”

MSNBC.com rolls out slick new TV page

MSNBC.com recently launched a newly updated section for its various TV shows.

The section features a large Flash rotator with all the MSNBC show hosts. Each hour this graphic changes to the upcoming show.

The page also uses many social media tie-ins including links to various Twitter profiles and live tweets.

NBC testing ‘Nightly News Now’ for mobile devices

Via WebNewser, NBC is testing a new web update newscast called “Nightly News Now.”

The one to two minute long program recaps the day’s news in a format designed for mobile devices.

For the moment “Nightly News Now” is being tested out on the weekends, with Lester Holt anchoring. The plan is to monitor the response to the webcast, with the possibility of expanding it down the line.

MSNBC for a while has put web only video on its site, complete with an anchor intro from a news nook. We’ll see if this catches on, but at the moment it could use some more polishing.

New app takes the place of anchor

Instead of browsing through individual items, the app uses text-to-speech technology to read the stories aloud, complete with an animated on-screen “anchor.”

Fox News Channel has finally caught up to competitors CNN and MSNBC with the launch of its iPhone app, reports Business Insider. The app, unlike CNN’s and like MSNBC’s, is free. Despite its price tag, CNN’s app remains the number one app in the news category.

TV Web sites integrate new Facebook feature

Broadcasting & Cable reports that several high profile news organizations, including CNN and ESPN, have already implemented the new Facebook “social plugins” on their Web sites.

Social plugins allow third-party Web sites to integrate directly with Facebook from, in the case of TV news sites, story pages. Users can click “like” on content and that information is fed to their Facebook profile and newsfeed, as well as shared with friends.

The tool, which was unveiled Wednesday, was seen on CNN.com news stories within hours.

WorldNow Launches Mobile CMS

WorldNow, one of the leading content management systems for television station Web sites, has announced at new mobile offering.

Incorporated in the new publishing system are a range of features that include the ability to generate customizable interactive forms to build consumer databases, collect and utilize user generated content, and push breaking news immediately out to mobile consumers. WorldNow says the CMS allows for greater consumer engagement and “strong opportunities to monetize the mobile audience,” reports Broadcasting & Cable.
