TV Web sites integrate new Facebook feature
Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Broadcasting & Cable reports that several high profile news organizations, including CNN and ESPN, have already implemented the new Facebook “social plugins” on their Web sites.

Social plugins allow third-party Web sites to integrate directly with Facebook from, in the case of TV news sites, story pages. Users can click “like” on content and that information is fed to their Facebook profile and newsfeed, as well as shared with friends.

The tool, which was unveiled Wednesday, was seen on CNN.com news stories within hours.

AP finally activates Twitter, Facebook to help cover Haiti quake
Thursday, January 14th, 2010

The Associated Press has finally hopped on the social media bandwagon, flipping the switch on its Facebook and Twitter profiles to aid in covering the devastating earthquakes in Haiti.

As of this morning, the Twitter account was at about 3,600 followers, while the Facebook page had just over 1,000 fans.

It’s interesting to note the timing of the launches — was AP planning to launch these around this time already and decided to use this big story as a good jumping off point? Or maybe AP management was waiting for a “big” news story? It’s also worth noting the launches come on the heels of the end of Google’s hosting of AP stories.

CNN.com plugs Facebook feed with sister of founder
Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

facebook

This morning, Randi Zuckerburg, the sister of Facebook founder Mark, and director of market development at the company, has popped up on the CNN.com live feed plugging the partnership between the two companies.

It’s a bit of a blur between corporate sponsorship since Zuckerburg appeared not as a guest but as a quasi-reporter interviewing a Facebook engineer about the feature complete with a CNN mic flag. Randi traded obviously-rehearsed questions with the engineer, but not before forgetting to hand the mic over to him, rendering his first few sentences unintelligible.

Personally, I’m also a bit disappointed with the Facebook/CNN.com partnership. First, the service is using the CNN.com feed, when I’d rather be seeing the main CNN video since I don’t have access to a television. Second, it’s honestly not that exciting to see all my friends’ status updates, which are all essentially the same thing over and over: “Joe is excited for today,” “Matt is excited,” “Bill is happy for today,” “Katie is watching history unfold.” Though one of my friends informed the Facebook world his car smells like celery today…
