CNN International debuts new London set to match Atlanta refresh
Monday, September 7th, 2009

Courtesy of CNNFan.org and CNN Observations, CNN International today debuted its new London set. The set, similar to the Atlanta refresh, uses the new blue, silver and green colors and features many plasmas and color changing areas.

Overall, this version of the set is more lighter and fresher looking than the Atlanta version. Unlike the Atlanta version, the London set appears to be new, instead of a refresh.

Also, so far no secondary rear projection screen has been seen on the London set, instead, there are three plasmas on the left.

It is too early to tell who designed this set given the fact that the design does not exactly match the CNN International Atlanta set. There are also some signs that it may be at least somewhat based on the original bones of the set.

NewscastTip: HD wings prove challenging design balance
Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

HD wings can pose a design challenge in order to meet the demands of incorporating branding and slick graphics into an element that also needs to be subtle enough to keep the focus where it belongs.

HD wings, the narrow, vertical strips that appear on the left and right of 4:30 video that’s displayed on 16:9 screens, will unfortunately remain commonplace on archival footage and video acquired from non-16:9 sources. HD wings can be distracting because they pop on and off screen at seemingly random times during the broadcast, often introducing an vivid splash of color that may seem out of place.

MSNBC debuts new music with new HD look
Monday, June 29th, 2009

Along with its new HD look, msnbc has also rolled out new music. Unlike CNN, MSNBC has never had a memorable musical signature. MSNBC’s last dayside theme was developed in-house by a MSNBC staffer and a guitar. The theme worked well with its graphics package, but did not convey the urgency of the news and always had the same beat.

Today, MSNBC debuted an updated music brand with the new theme heard above. At times the music sounds almost like a piece of Videohelper production music, and it very well could be since MSNBC uses much of the VH library during its programming, but at times it also sounds like a custom piece developed specifically for them. We hope to find official word on who composed it along with an extended sample.

WEAR-TV goes HD with a fish tank
Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

WEAR-TV in Pensacola/Mobile, Ala. is preparing for its launch in high definition.

The set, designed by Devlin Design Group for Sinclair Broadcasting Group, features many high tech elements and one very unique element.

“A new set featuring 30 HD monitors, state-of-the-art weather equipment and an anchor desk that can rotate 180 degrees will debut with the conversion. Comparatively speaking, the old studio is a walk-in closet, and the new environs are the Taj Mahal,” writes Julio Diaz.

The sets most unique element is a fish tank built into a desk. Looking back on many different sets, this has to be the only one we have ever seen with a fish tank other than WEAR-TV’s previous set.
