KTTV-TV goes HD

KTTV-TV, in LA, became the first top 3 FOX O&O to launch in high definition. WIth the change, FOX 11 debated updated FOX graphics and a new sleeker lower third which better matches FOX News Channel’s current HD graphics. Will the other FOX’s follow?

Our take on WBBM-TV’s new streetside set

WBBM-TV debuted its new streetside studio with its switch to HD brodacasting, becoming the third station in the market to use a windowed set.

The new set, designed by PDG, features a working monitor wall as its camera center shot, something that isn’t seen very often but gives the set an active, high-tech feel, especially since all the monitors used have sleek black frames.

WEAR-TV goes HD with a fish tank

WEAR-TV in Pensacola/Mobile, Ala. is preparing for its launch in high definition.

The set, designed by Devlin Design Group for Sinclair Broadcasting Group, features many high tech elements and one very unique element.

“A new set featuring 30 HD monitors, state-of-the-art weather equipment and an anchor desk that can rotate 180 degrees will debut with the conversion. Comparatively speaking, the old studio is a walk-in closet, and the new environs are the Taj Mahal,” writes Julio Diaz.

The sets most unique element is a fish tank built into a desk. Looking back on many different sets, this has to be the only one we have ever seen with a fish tank other than WEAR-TV’s previous set.

MSNBC providing ‘interactive HD views’ of news stories

MSNBC.com has been experimenting with what it calls “interactive HD views” of news stories. These are essentially super-high quality panoramic photographs presented using Microsoft’s HD View Beta 2 plugin. As with the similar QuickTime interactive view technology, the user can zoom, pan and tilt around the photograph.

New set design firm Fifteenhundred launched

We have some exciting news to share with NewscastStudio users.

HD Media Ventures, LLC, the new parent company of NewscastStudio, is launching our own set design company called Fifteenhundred.

We realize this is a big, bold step for us as both a company and Web site. However, we want to assure you it’s not going to affect the way we report on the set design industry or any other areas we cover. We are, as always, very enthusiastic about the industry as a whole and will continue showcasing other firms’ creativity and projects. All set design firms contribute valuable ideas to newscasts across the country and drive the industry as a whole.

In addition, NewscastStudio will continue to accept advertising from other creative services companies as well as help promote their work and news as much as possible.

It’s important to note that Fifteenhundred and NewscastStudio will remain separate entities.

ABC News pushes up HD debut

ABC News has decided to move up its HD debut from the previously scheduled September 8 to today.

“On Aug. 25, World News with Charles Gibson and Nightline start broadcasting in 720-line progressive (720p) HD, first from the Democratic National Convention in Denver, then from the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul the following week.

And like the other networks, ABC News will also broadcast both conventions in HD for the first time.” (more…)

WBOC-TV and FX Group bring a newsplex to life

WBOC-TV in tiny DMA 147, Salisbury, Md., has built a new Newsplex that rivals those of WHDH-TV and WSVN-TV.

The new Newsplex features a anchor desk that can rotate 300 degrees and has four 42-inch HD monitors along with many, many, many smaller HD monitors. (more…)

WGCL-TV moves to a temporary set

From our friends at Newsbuzzatl, WGCL-TV in Atlanta, Georgia has moved its broadcasts from their FX Group set to a temporary set.

KOMU-TV launches HD with revised graphics

After years of planning and preparing, KOMU-TV in Columbia, Missouri has launched in HD.

For the HD launch, KOMU-TV decided to revise their current graphics package with some small updates to allow an easy transition for viewers and employees.

KOMU-TV is one of a handful of stations operated by colleges and one of the only college run stations to be backed by a major network. KOMU-TV is also the third smallest DMA station to launch in HD. (more…)

KHQ-TV launches HD in time for the Olympics

KHQ-TV, the NBC affiliate based in Spokane, Wash., has launched in HD for the start of the 2008 Olympics.

KOMU-TV to go HD

KOMU-TV 8, the University of Missouri owned NBC affiliate in Columbia, Missouri, is scheduled to launch in HD Friday in time for the 2008 Olympics.

KOMU-TV is located in DMA 137, making it one of the lower DMA stations to launch in HD. The change will bring about new graphics and major changes to their weather coverage.

“It’s an exciting time at KOMU 8,” said KOMU 8 General Manager Marty Siddall.  “Moving to high definition has been a major endeavor that has been years in the making, all to bring our viewers the clearest, sharpest and most precise images” 

A source at the station commented that a new set is in the works for 2009 along with a possible new graphics package to match. (more…)

KSWB-TV goes FOX with new set and graphics

Recently launched, KSWB-TV has been garnering a lot of buzz lately for its recently relaunch in HD.

As part of their switch to FOX, KSWB-TV revamped their entire broadcast and launched in HD. For the switch, KSWB-TV received a new set by Broadcast Design International. (more…)
