Stephen Arnold Music creates a Sonic Brand for Maddow

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

Stephen Arnold Music is responsible for the music for MSNBC’s newest show, The Rachel Maddow Show.

The theme is an interesting guitar track with a unique beat. For a sample, visit Arnold’s YouTube page here.

Arnold also recently composed some of the music for FOX Business Channel. It will be interesting to see if Arnold is breaking into the network market.

MSNBC.com tweaks TV section header, adds Maddow graphics

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

An update to yesterday’s post about the new header found on the TV section of MSNBC.com: The network has tweaked the header and now displays each show’s air time. Formatted using text, the new labels look a bit out of place and would probably work better as part of the graphic.

MSNBC.com has also updated the header of Rachel.MSNBC.com to refelect Rachel Maddow’s show’s red, white and blue graphics package.

First reactions to Maddow production values

Monday, September 8th, 2008

Rachel Maddow’s new show debuted this evening using the main MSNBC newsroom set, though the producers seem to have elected to keep the show confined to the non-newsroom side of the studio.

The show’s graphics are a combination of bold red, white and blue tones with a bit of a grunge-like texture added. The large plasma array that normally displays a live feed from Rockefeller Plaza projects a sketch-style version of a cityscape during Maddow’s time.

NBC News debuts spiffy alternative to whiteboard

Monday, September 8th, 2008

It looks like NBC has retired Tim Russert’s famous whiteboard and has a new way to demonstrate electoral vote scenarios.

NBC’s Chuck Todd was showing off his network’s new electoral map device on “Hardball” tonight.

The new setup includes a ceiling-mounted camera that looks down onto a touchscreen tabletop that allows electoral votes to be tossed between candidates with totals updating in real-time. The results can also be displayed full-screen and on the plasma monitor behind Todd and the device also doubles as a telestrator.

MSNBC goes into hurricane mode

Monday, September 1st, 2008

MSNBC has joined other networks and adopted a new look for Hurricane Gustav. Originally, MSNBC had just the hurricane watch box, but last night they rolled out their total hurricane coverage.

MSNBC.com launches Virtual Lifestyles

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

MSNBC.com has launched a new sub site called Virtual Lifestyles. The new sub site appears to be heavily backed by sponsors and features videos on technology topics including recycling, fuel cells and other issues of today.

MSNBC.com continues to roll out these new branded video players for many of their brands.

MSNBC updates convention coverage

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Desk from last night

Tonight, MSNBC’s desk with Keith and Chris featured a plasma. Last night a cheap card board cutout appeared in front of it providing limited uses.

The monitor was now filled with MSNBC’s new convention graphics which feature unique streaming ribbons and star confetti.

Convention coverage on TV and Online Part 2

Monday, August 25th, 2008

As the convention rolls on, more and more networks are showing their full hands.

MSNBC has a secondary desk upstairs of their platform for Keith and Chris. NBC News also has new graphics for tonight’s convention coverage, unfortunately they are not as good as their previous graphics and do not match any other NBC election graphics.

Convention coverage on TV and Online

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Many networks have made slight tweaks for the conventions. MSNBC has tweaked their lower third to include a donkey or a elephant depending on the convention along with coloring the lower third red, white and blue.

CNN has switched to their political graphics with the truss work and grunge style. FOX News has kept with their unified HD look but rolled out some small changes.

New banner ad touts MSNBC.com’s branded sites

Friday, August 15th, 2008

MSNBC.com recently began running a rectangle ad on the site homepage that showcases the individually-branded sites of Countdown, Nightly News, Scoop, Today, NBC Sports and recently-acquired Newsvine.

The ad allows users to click arrow buttons on either side of the container to show the next site screen shot, which appears after a quick transition effect.

This is a creative way to promote sites, but also runs the risk of being tuned out since it’s in the same position as regular ads normally are.

This also marks one of the first times MSNBC has promoted Newsvine. MSNBC has been linking to conversations and topic pages on Newsvine for select stories, but this marks one of the most prominent cross promotions.

WX+ reports from new location

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

MSNBC was using a different location for Weather Plus updates at 30 Rock this afternoon. The network had moved away from using the Manhattan studios for weather updates on MSNBC, opting to use WeatherPlus headquarters at CNBC in Englewood Cliffs, N.J. instead.

When weather does originate from New York City, it is typically done from the balcony area, but today Jeff Raineri was reporting from the newsroom floor, with a handheld camera used. Raineri used the desktop computers to control his on-screen graphics as well.

By the way, the cable on the right side of the screen is a nice touch.

UPDATE: About thirty minutes later Raineri was back up on the balcony:

Get the ‘Scoop’ at new site

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

MSNBC.com has rolled out the red carpet on another individually-branded video-based site for gossip column “The Scoop.”

The new design features the now-familiar MSNBC video player with a bold red background. Below, additional headlines are framed in a rather sickening shade of yellow/brown/orange/green — not a great choice (image after the jump).
