WPBF-TV debuts new newscenter
Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

wpbf

WPBF-TV, the ABC affiliate serving West Palm Beach, has debuted an updated newsroom and set designed by FX Group. The new look uses the bones of the newsplex originally designed by BDI, but with substantial changes to colors, materials and technology.

The design appears to be a breakthrough style for FX Group and a big departure from the usual Hearst-Argyle set designs seen recently at WPBF-TV’s sister stations across the country. Light wood toned arches create a vaulted feel to newsroom, creating a unique look that may have been inspired by the ABC logo’s globe shape. The arches also feature lighted elements on the inner surface, creating a great sense of depth and added visual interest to these architectural features.

NewscastTip: Good customer service vital to building brand
Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Everyone knows good customer service is disappearing, even in customer-centric industries such as retail and hospitality, so it may be surprising to think about customer service in the newsroom, but the fact is it can play an important role in boosting your station’s brand and effectiveness as a news organization.

When answering the assignment desk phone, for example, adding a courteous greeting such as “Good morning” is much more friendly than a curt single-word greeting such as “Newsroom.” Tacking on a “May I help you?” at the end of the greeting is also a small measure that can have a bigger impact that you may think.

When dealing with callers, it’s also important to recognize you appreciate their call, no matter how trivial the subject or how busy the newsroom is. Staffers should be encouraged to speak with energy in their voices and provide feedback to callers, even it’s just a simple “I understand” or “Yes, I see.”

WNBC studios under renovation
Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

The seventh floor of 30 Rockefeller Plaza has been transformed from WNBC-TV’s newsroom to a construction site. It’s not clear what the new area will look like, but the area is being turned into an “Information Center” that will support WNBC-TV over-the-air news production as well as the channel’s new local 24-hour cable news channel that is expected to launch by the end of theyear.

30 Rock has been seeing its share of construction lately. The third floor side of the building, including Studios 3A and 3C, was renovated earlier this year to make room for the new combined NBC News and MSNBC newsroom that occurred in conjunction with MSNBC’s move to New York City from its original New Jersey headquarters.

It will be interesting to see if WNBC-TV’s new look as the network’s O&O will take the modern, European style design that has been seen in the NBC newsroom, “Nightly News” set and the “Today” windowed studio downstairs.
