MSNBC Sunday originating from ‘Nightly’ set

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

MSNBC’s live Sunday morning coverage, anchored by Alex Witt, is using the “NBC Nightly News” set this morning.

Producers are, for the most part, sticking with very tight shots. Witt is framed against the warm reddish-wood to the right of the studio’s RP screen.

Updated: Some network election night plans revealed

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Some details about election night coverage plans are beginning to emerge, though the networks are being pretty secretive about further details.

  • ABC News will be reporting election night results from its Times Square studio. All ABC News programming will originate from the home of “Good Morning America” during the week leading up to election night. ABC will then use the ribbons of tickers and big-screen monitor above the studios to display election results and data. ABC has also rented out signage on the Reuters, Nasdaq and the Hard Rock Cafe buildings to display results. ABC also plans to place reporters in the crowd, interviewing passerby.
  • NBC News’ “Democracy Plaza” is becoming “Election Plaza,” a scaled down version of the 2004 extravaganza (maybe as a result of those NBC Universal budget cuts?). Though the exhibits and other features will be gone, NBC still plans to have an electoral map on the Rockefeller Plaza ice skating rink and the climbing electoral vote banners going up the side of 30 Rock. It’s not clear if the network will place NBC and MSNBC anchors outdoors or in a studio setting, or a combination of both. It will be interesting to see how NBC integrates its virtual studio graphics that were used during the primary season.
  • Fox News Channel will be broadcasting its coverage on the former NBC screen in Times Square and is also planning a Webcast outside the network’s studios on the Avenue of the Americas.

WNBC studios under renovation

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

The seventh floor of 30 Rockefeller Plaza has been transformed from WNBC-TV’s newsroom to a construction site. It’s not clear what the new area will look like, but the area is being turned into an “Information Center” that will support WNBC-TV over-the-air news production as well as the channel’s new local 24-hour cable news channel that is expected to launch by the end of theyear.

30 Rock has been seeing its share of construction lately. The third floor side of the building, including Studios 3A and 3C, was renovated earlier this year to make room for the new combined NBC News and MSNBC newsroom that occurred in conjunction with MSNBC’s move to New York City from its original New Jersey headquarters.

It will be interesting to see if WNBC-TV’s new look as the network’s O&O will take the modern, European style design that has been seen in the NBC newsroom, “Nightly News” set and the “Today” windowed studio downstairs.

Fourth hour of ‘Today’ moves inside

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

The fourth hour of “Today” has stopped using the outdoor area of Rockefeller Plaza as a broadcast space. Apparently, nearby commercial tenants were complaining the show, hosted by Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford, was generating too much noise and becoming a “distraction.”

NBC has a standing agreement in place that prohibits the show from using the outdoor space past 10 a.m, but the show moved outside when Gifford joined the show.

Despite that, NBC may still use the plaza for its Memorial Day editions since nearby offices will be mostly empty on the holiday.
