WPIX, NewsNation return to studios after getting ‘all clear’

Nexstar Media Group’s broadcasting operations in New York City were able to return to their 42nd Street building after structural concerns of a nearby building forced an evacuation the day before.

The facility, located at 220 East 42nd Street, includes the newsroom and studios for WPIX as well as operations for NewsNation, the 24-hour cable network owned by Nexstar.

The station was given the “all clear” to return to its facility at 220 East 42nd Street around 10:30 p.m. ET July 7, 2026, according to reporters’ social media accounts.

WPIX broadcast its morning newscast back in the studio July 8, 2026, with ongoing coverage of the structural issues that caused the evacuation the day before.

Early on the morning of July 7, 2026, an emergency call reported debris falling from the former Pfizer building at 235 East 42nd Street. It was later discovered that support structures within the building had buckled. The building is currently under construction to convert it from office space to luxury apartment units, a project that includes adding several floors atop the existing tower. 

Officials evacuated many buildings in the vicinity as a precaution. Portions of neighboring streets were also closed, with some of those closures remaining in place as of July 8.

WPIX’s building was part of the evacuation order. The station spent most of July 7 broadcasting from the streets around the cordoned-off area. 

Social media posts showed the station was using its remote news vehicles to help broadcast from temporary setups. At one point, it began to rain, forcing crews and talent to scramble to find umbrellas and protect sensitive electronic gear from the water.

The station’s newsroom and technical operations were also affected but have since returned to normal. 

No injuries were reported as a result of the collapse.
