NBC Bay Area adding 3 p.m. newscast to fill ‘Kelly Clarkson’ gap

NBC Bay Area is expanding its weekday news schedule with a new hourlong 3 p.m. newscast beginning Sept. 7, 2026, replacing “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”

KNTV in San Jose, California, said Janelle Wang and Audrey Asistio will anchor “NBC Bay Area at 3,” with Vianey Arana serving as meteorologist and reporter.

The addition will bring the NBC-owned station’s weekday local news output to more than seven hours per day.

Although not mentioned in KNTV’s announcement, public television listings for Sept. 7 show a program called “NBC Bay Area News Tonight” airing at 7 p.m., replacing when the station currently re-airs “Clarkson.” 

“The addition of a 3 p.m. newscast strengthens our ability to deliver timely, essential reporting when our audiences need it,” said Stephanie Adrouny, vice president of news for NBC Bay Area and Telemundo 48, in a statement. “Audrey, Janelle and Vianey are experienced, trusted journalists who know the Bay Area and understand the stories that matter to our communities.”

Wang is a longtime KNTV journalist who has covered local, national and international stories. Asistio joined the station in 2021 and has reported on major stories across the region. Arana covers weather, climate and environmental issues in addition to providing forecasts focused on the Bay Area’s microclimates.

The newscast will follow “Hallie Jackson Now,” which airs from 2 to 3 p.m. as a simulcast from NBC News Now.

KNTV follows its fellow NBC-owned station KXAS, in Dallas–Ft. Worth, Texas, which previously announced it would launch a 3 p.m. newscast to replace “Kelly.”

The new schedule means the station will offer a substantial amount of local and world news from early in the morning until primetime, illustrating broadcasters’ decreasing reliance on syndicated programming.

“Today 3rd Hour” and “Today With Jenna & Sheinelle” air from 9 to 11 a.m. on the station. Both shows feature more of a talk format but are produced by NBC News. “California Live,” which is not produced by newsroom staffers, will continue to air at 11:30 a.m.

The news-heavy schedule is bolstered by the fact KNTV carries “NBC Nightly News” twice — once at 4 p.m. local time and again at 6:30 p.m., as well as the simulcast of Jackson’s show.
