The “single pane of glass” has become one of the broadcast technology industry’s most persistent promises. The phrase appears across control, monitoring, orchestration, playout and production systems. It describes a simple objective: Give operators one place to see what is happening and one interface through which to manage it.
The appeal is obvious.
Modern media operations span more systems, vendors, protocols and delivery platforms than the control rooms they replaced. A unified interface suggests that complexity can be gathered, organized and made manageable.
But a single screen does not necessarily create a single system.
Behind the interface, facilities still depend on products from multiple vendors, each with its own data model, controls, APIs, alarms and understanding of system state. The pane may be unified. The infrastructure behind it often is not.
That gap between visual centralization and operational integration is becoming one of the central challenges of software-driven broadcast systems.
Multi-vendor is the operating reality
The argument for best-of-breed infrastructure remains strong.
No single vendor is likely to provide the strongest camera systems, routing, graphics, playout, asset management, monitoring and distribution tools for every organization. Broadcasters therefore assemble systems around specialist products and connect them through standards, APIs and orchestration layers.
“Most media organizations recognize that no single vendor provides every component required for modern production and distribution,” said Heather Mellish, vice president of global sales at Zixi.
That reality has increased the importance of interoperability, open standards and multi-protocol support, Mellish said. Organizations want flexibility to select the appropriate system for each function without surrendering centralized management or operational consistency.
Narinder Ball, director of technology at Gravity Media, made a similar point.
“The industry has moved beyond the idea of a single-vendor ecosystem,” Ball said.
The strongest projects begin with operational requirements, not a predetermined technology stack, he added. Different systems should be integrated around the production rather than forcing production teams to conform to the limits of one vendor.
That is the best-of-breed argument in its most practical form. Broadcasters should preserve choice, avoid lock-in and design workflows around the work that needs to be done. The difficulty begins at the handoffs.
Integration creates its own architecture
Every additional product introduces more than another function.
It also introduces another source of status information, another control mechanism and another potential point of failure. Standards may define how systems exchange signals or connection instructions, but they do not guarantee that each system interprets workflow state in the same way.
G Morgan, executive vice president of sales at Globecast Americas, located the problem at those boundaries.
“The challenge in multi-vendor environments is rarely that individual technologies do not work,” Morgan said. “It is that complexity builds up at the handoffs between systems, support models and operational responsibilities.”
A modern media company may rely on separate providers for contribution, production, cloud infrastructure, playout, content delivery, monitoring and analytics. Each component can perform correctly in isolation while the full workflow remains difficult to operate and support.
That makes integration an architecture of its own.
The system must determine which platform holds the authoritative schedule, which tool reports the true state of a signal and which vendor is responsible when an issue crosses product boundaries. Those questions become more difficult as workflows move from fixed hardware into software services that can be deployed, scaled or reconfigured dynamically.
A dashboard can collect information from those systems. It cannot automatically reconcile every difference among them.
The case for vertical integration
Adam Leah, creative director at Nxtedition, offered the roundtable’s clearest challenge to the best-of-breed model.
“Best-of-breed multi-vendor environments are fragile, not because the individual products are poor, but because a horizontally federated solution has gaps between each product that need to be bridged by protocols, standards or APIs,” Leah said.
Those gaps produce multiple sources of truth, he argued. One system may know the editorial state of a story, another the condition of the playout chain and another the status of graphics or media assets. An orchestration layer can connect them, but it may still be assembling a workflow from systems that maintain separate internal realities.
Leah contrasted that approach with a vertically integrated stack in which the components share a common data model and understand the state of the entire operation.
The argument runs against the industry’s broad preference for open, modular infrastructure. It also addresses a real weakness in the single-pane concept.
A centralized interface works best when it is not merely displaying data from disconnected systems, but operating from a coherent understanding of the workflow. Without that, the interface risks becoming a polished layer over unresolved integration complexity.
The tradeoff is equally clear. A vertical stack may reduce ambiguity and simplify support, but it can also increase reliance on one vendor. The organization gains a common source of truth while surrendering some freedom to replace individual components.
The debate is therefore not simply open versus proprietary. It is a choice between different forms of dependency.
Standards solve defined problems
Open standards are essential to multi-vendor systems, but their usefulness is bounded by what they were designed to address.
Miroslav Jeras, chief technology officer at Pebble, noted that standards generally solve specific, well-defined problems. Real facilities inevitably encounter areas that fall outside those definitions.
“Bridging those gaps requires hard-won practical experience that is rarely surfaced in the public domain,” Jeras said.
That observation helps explain why standards compliance does not produce automatic integration.
A discovery standard can allow systems to find one another. A connection-management specification can establish a route. Neither necessarily defines how an operator should understand a failure involving several vendors, how alarms should be prioritized or which system should control recovery.
Those decisions are left to integrators, vendors and facility engineering teams. The result is that many systems are technically interoperable but not operationally unified. They can exchange signals and commands. They may still lack a shared understanding of intent, context and responsibility.
Visibility is not control
The single pane of glass is also expected to solve an observability problem.
As workflows become distributed, operators need to see signal health, network performance, metadata, routing, processing and delivery status in one place. Centralized monitoring is increasingly necessary simply to understand the complete service. But visibility and control are different achievements.
A platform may display alarms from several systems without being able to determine which one represents the root cause. It may allow an operator to trigger a workflow without exposing every dependency behind that action. It may normalize the user interface while leaving the underlying support model fragmented.
That does not make the unified interface useless.
It makes the phrase “single pane of glass” an incomplete description of what operators actually need.
They need a common operational model, not only a common display. They need systems to agree on state, ownership and priority. They need enough abstraction to manage complexity without losing the detail required when something fails.
One screen, several truths
The industry is unlikely to abandon multi-vendor infrastructure. Specialist products, existing investments and the need to avoid lock-in make that neither practical nor desirable for many organizations.
Vertically integrated platforms will also continue to make a credible case that coherence is more valuable than unlimited choice.
The likely outcome is not a decisive victory for either model.
Broadcasters will continue assembling mixed environments while demanding deeper integration from vendors and orchestration systems. Some workflows will consolidate into unified platforms. Others will remain federated because no single stack can meet every technical or business requirement.
The single pane of glass will remain the goal.
But its success will not be measured by how many systems appear on one screen. It will be measured by whether those systems behave like parts of one operation when the operator needs them to.
Until then, the industry’s unified interface will continue to sit above several products, several support teams and, often, several competing versions of the truth.
