The city of Detroit is undergoing a major transformation. Detroit was recently named one of the World’s Top 50 Greatest Places by Time Magazine. The client, WJBK, Fox 2, wanted the Devlin Design Group design team to capture the essence of the city and create a vibrant lifestyle set. They wanted to honor the history of the city, and to showcase some of the dramatic changes, all familiar to their audience. The result: a beautiful converted industrial loft space with windows overlooking the downtown Detroit skyline, a city known for its grit, and pride!
The history of this industrial city is reflected in the steel and wood beams, reclaimed brick, stone, and a wood floor with paths of concrete. Historic photos honor the wealth in the city in the 1920s. Under construction is an impressive new bridge, honoring the city’s favorite hockey icon, Gordie Howe. This new skyline changing bridge was the inspiration for the contemporary round desk with twisted steel cabling. Three midcentury modern style chairs anchor the interview space. The elements combine to create a warm and inviting space for lively conversation.
The modest budget dictated a well-planned use of technology. The ‘windows on the city’ wrap the studio and were achieved by using a row of 7 75” LCD monitors. An 8’8” x 4’8” LED wall, shared with the interview area and news desk, is the perfect spot for enhanced storytelling. A group of side-by-side monitors create a more intimate presentation area.
The lifestyle morning show “The Nine,” and “The Noon” call this space home. Color changing RGB lights change the look and mood of the studio and make it possible for other programs to share this versatile space.
What made this project a standout, the FOX 2 team understands the essence of Detroit’s culture and history is a source of pride for their viewers. For Detroiters that remember the history behind the beautiful historic buildings by masters like Albert Kahn and Daniel Burnham, the automotive roots of the Motor City, and the legend of Motown, the new studio celebrates dynamic storytelling and what it is to be a Detroiter.
