Control room, switching and signal flow
What are the biggest challenges in managing signal flow across complex environments?
Ciro Noronha, Ph.D., CTO, Cobalt Digital: The first challenge is simply the interconnectivity. The next challenge has to do with transport formats. One good example is the number of audio channels over ST 2110; you can have anywhere between 1 and 64 channels in an audio essence. Managing this can become very complicated, and you may need to add converters in the path. Then you have the processing elements and the orchestration, which all need to talk to each other. These problems are all being worked on, but the solutions are not quite ready.
Ian Wagdin, VP, technology and innovation, Appear: Visibility and determinism. In an SDI world, signal paths were fixed, visible and relatively straightforward to troubleshoot. In a distributed IP environment, you’re managing multicast streams, PTP synchronization, NMOS registries, and software-defined routing — and a fault anywhere in that chain can manifest in ways that are hard to diagnose quickly. The biggest operational challenge we hear from customers isn’t connectivity; it’s observability. Knowing the state of every flow, in real time, at the level of detail needed to make fast decisions during a live production. Monitoring and orchestration tooling has had to evolve significantly to keep up.
Peder Boberg, product owner, Intinor: The primary challenge is interoperability, translating between the myriad of formats and protocols (like NDI, SRT, and SMPTE 2110) used by different vendors and sites. Broadcasters need intelligent routing solutions that can ingest any protocol, normalize it, and securely transport it across varying network conditions without adding latency.
Chris Scheck, head of marketing content, Lawo: Orchestration and control need to be both agile and intuitive. Ideally, operators should never realize the underlying complexity of the technology stack. The HOME orchestration system not only handles device discovery and registration, it also allows to start and stop processing apps to adapt the workflow and processing instances to the task at hand, and communicates with the broadcast control system to speed up usually one-off configuration sessions that ultimately enable single-button control for operators. Adding a software-based scheduling service such as DataMiner, finally, allows operations to skip the initial button press as all apps and routes are put in place automatically seconds before the production goes live.
Dave MacKinnon, VP, product management, Clear-Com: The biggest challenge is that signal flow is no longer confined to a single room or a single signal type. Once you are dealing with mixed environments across IP, legacy infrastructure, virtual clients, and third-party systems, complexity tends to show up at the boundaries — format translation, control visibility, network behavior, and making sure the operator still experiences the system as something simple and predictable.
How are switching systems evolving for remote or cloud-based production?
Heather Mellish, VP of global sales, Zixi: Switching is increasingly becoming software-defined and integrated into broader production workflows. Beyond traditional source selection, organizations are using automated switching for redundancy, regionalization, rights management, and event-based workflow transitions. This allows production teams to support more destinations and content variations without adding significant operational overhead.
Narinder Ball, director, technology, Gravity Media: We are seeing a move towards switching systems becoming more software-driven and location-agnostic, allowing production teams to access resources wherever they are needed and scale as required. Rather than being tied to a specific control room, switching capabilities can now be distributed across centralized facilities, remote production centers, and cloud environments. This gives operators and program makers greater flexibility while helping organizations make more efficient use of technical resources.
Where are the most common points of failure in control room workflows?
Dave Hoffman, business development manager, Americas, Blackmagic Design: Most facilities have evolved over time and operate with a combination of legacy infrastructure, newer software platforms and equipment from multiple vendors. While these environments provide flexibility, they can also create points of friction where control protocols or timing information are not perfectly aligned. Even minor inconsistencies can introduce delays or require manual intervention during live production.
How are production control rooms evolving to handle more sources, formats and destinations simultaneously?
Ciro Noronha, Ph.D., CTO, Cobalt Digital: The obvious answer is to add more infrastructure; there is no way around that. You can also go for light compression such as JPEG-XS. This takes care of the sources and destinations. For remote destinations, you can use the Internet and add protocols such as RIST to get a reliable transfer going. For formats, deploy flexible solutions/products that are prepared to send and receive the most common formats. An alternative is to have format converters in your network — just plug them in, and they are a “floating” available resource that can be deployed as needed.
Ian Wagdin, VP, technology and innovation, Appear: The driver is density: more sources, more formats (HDR, HFR, multiple resolutions), and more simultaneous outputs for different distribution platforms. Hardware that used to be fixed-function is being replaced by processing platforms that can be reconfigured in software as requirements change. At the same time, the human interface has to get simpler even as the underlying system gets more complex. The control room of today needs to abstract that complexity without hiding it — operators need to trust the system while retaining the ability to intervene precisely and quickly when something goes wrong.
Chris Scheck, head of marketing content, Lawo: As a growing number of platforms or destinations need to be served simultaneously, a sound strategy is critical. For some projects, capturing and producing an event with the best possible quality — UHD HDR and immersive audio — leaves all options open for destinations other than premium viewers. This can be achieved with real-time up/down/cross conversion (UDX) and transcoding apps, which also allow to ingest NDI and SRT streams where necessary.
Sam Peterson, COO, BitCentral: Playout is evolving from a linear-channel function into a multi-platform delivery layer. Modern systems need to prepare, schedule and deliver content across broadcast, FAST and digital outputs from a unified workflow. Organizations can therefore expand distribution without duplicating operations for every platform while maintaining a consistent viewer experience, regardless of how audiences choose to consume content.
Dave MacKinnon, VP, product management, Clear-Com: Weak points tend to be network dependencies, poorly managed interoperability between systems, unclear control layers, and designs that still assume fixed hardware behavior even though the production itself has become more distributed and software-driven. Likewise, cybersecurity is a major issue now that production systems are virtual and more likely to be hosted elsewhere. Broadcast vendors have been slow to adopt modern cyber protocols, and it’s been good to see customers, driven by IT departments, pressing for better solutions in that arena.
Matt Conrad, CEO, DSC Labs: The trend is toward more compatibility across hardware and software systems, and the more that control can be IP-based, the more agile the room becomes. When you’re mixing standard broadcast cameras with one-off cine-style cameras, being able to repoint and reconfigure your control surfaces from software is much faster than swapping in proprietary hardware for every variation. The same flexibility is needed on the signal and color side — we’re now shading cameras not just for SDR, but with an understanding of how that signal will land in HDR and on streaming devices in P3, often simultaneously.
What does an efficient switching workflow look like today in a multi-platform production environment?
Heather Mellish, VP of global sales, Zixi: Modern master control extends beyond managing a small number of linear channels. Teams are now responsible for supporting linear, streaming, FAST, regionalized, and partner-specific outputs simultaneously. Success depends on automation, centralized visibility, and the ability to normalize and manage content consistently across multiple platforms and distribution partners.
Master control, playout and channel origination
How has the role of master control changed as distribution becomes more fragmented?
Rick Young, SVP, head of global products, LTN: Master control has evolved from a linear broadcast function into the operational hub that connects acquisition, playout, automation, and distribution. As a result, master control is increasingly responsible for orchestrating workflows across multiple facilities and destinations while maintaining a consistent viewer experience. This shift is also driving interest in hosted and cloud-based models. Broadcasters need to support more services without increasing operational burden, making centralized and software-driven workflows increasingly attractive.
Adam Leah, creative director, Nxtedition: Master control used to mean one channel going to one destination and the job was essentially traffic management and QC before transmission. Now the same facility needs to feed linear, streaming, FAST and social simultaneously, often with localized or regionalized variants of the same content, and the traditional appliance stack wasn’t designed to do that without significant additional investment in each new output. At WIN Network in Australia, Nxtedition powers 16 simultaneous regional channels alongside all of the automation, NRCS, MAM, ingest, graphics and planning capabilities from a single platform, which gives a concrete illustration of what it actually looks like when master control, newsroom and distribution are collapsed into one coherent operation.
Miroslav Jeras, CTO, Pebble: If anything, distribution fragmentation has reinforced its importance. Any linear channel, whether delivered over traditional broadcast infrastructure or as a FAST channel over IP, still requires the same core disciplines: source switching, branding integrity, compliance and continuity. Ad insertion is becoming increasingly critical too, as broadcasters look to monetize content across every distribution platform, while streaming services carrying live events, particularly sports, bring the precision of ad breaks and the stakes of on-air errors into even sharper focus.
Sara Biron, VP, sales and operations, Crispin Corporation, Sony Group: We have seen a significant shift in the overall approach to master control automation in recent years. While content remains the primary driver for broadcast facilities, organizations are increasingly being asked to do more with fewer resources. As a result, many companies are moving toward a more centralized ingest strategy, allowing them to better manage the growing volume of content being distributed across the market.
Sam Peterson, COO, BitCentral: Master control has evolved from overseeing a handful of linear channels to managing content delivery across a much broader and more fragmented distribution environment. Its role now centers on visibility, quality assurance and operational control across platforms, helping broadcasters manage more outputs without adding unnecessary complexity or cost.
Michael Demb, VP, product strategy, TAG Video Systems: The supply chain has more points now — production on-prem, streams moving into the cloud, remote contributors, multiple distribution destinations — and each of those points has to be right for every platform. Master control used to be a single room with eyes on a wall; now operators need visibility across a distributed set of handoff points, and a single-view picture of what’s happening across all of them. The role hasn’t disappeared, it’s expanded, and the tools have to expand with it.
What does a modern master control operation look like in a streaming and multi-channel environment?
Yang Cai, CEO and president, VisualOn: A modern master control is less about physical switchers and more about centralized, cloud-based dashboards that orchestrate highly distributed workflows. Operators now focus on managing automated scheduling, monitoring multi-platform data streams, and ensuring seamless server-side ad insertion across diverse endpoints. This shift transforms master control from a hardware-heavy room into an agile, data-driven operational hub.
Rick Young, SVP, head of global products, LTN: Modern master control is built around centralization, and many broadcasters are moving away from siloed operations and toward workflows that bring signal acquisition, playout, monitoring, graphics, and distribution together within a single environment. This is particularly valuable for sports and live programming, where multiple channels, feeds, and distribution partners often need to be managed at the same time. Centralized operations make it easier to launch new services, support regionalized programming, and maintain consistent quality across a growing number of outputs.
Graham Sharp, VP, sales and marketing, BCNexxt: Most broadcasters built playout silos to serve each distribution method, so as distribution fragmented, so did master control — you could say it lost the ‘master’ and each distribution system, linear, OTT, FAST and VoD each had their own control room. Due to the increased costs of operating these silos, there is now a move to consolidate them back in to a single point of operational control, so back to a single master control operation and a single point of management over all the distribution formats.
Ali Hodjat, senior director of marketing, Telestream: In a streaming and multi-channel environment, a modern master control operation functions less like a localized hardware switching center and more like a centralized software orchestration and observability hub. Rather than relying on manual operator intervention to prep, verify, and monitor unique feeds for linear, OTT, and FAST channels, modern master control integrates content-aware intelligence to automatically analyze and normalize media files before they ever reach transmission. By shifting the operational focus from manual verification to automated exception handling, lean engineering teams can maintain full visibility over the health, synchronization, and compliance of dozens of concurrent channels with complete confidence.
Sam Peterson, COO, BitCentral: Today’s master control operations are increasingly centralized, software-driven, and focused on managing many outputs from a single operational view. Instead of treating broadcast, streaming and digital delivery as separate silos, teams are overseeing connected workflows that give them better control, faster issue response and greater confidence across every endpoint.
G Morgan, EVP, sales, Globecast Americas: Modern master control has evolved from a fixed linear monitoring function into an operational hub managing content across linear, OTT, FAST, digital and platform-specific services. Operators need visibility not only into whether a channel is on air, but whether the right content, metadata, quality and compliance requirements are being delivered to the right destination. The most effective model combines automation, proactive monitoring and skilled human oversight within a managed service framework that provides clear accountability.
How are playout systems evolving to handle linear, FAST and digital outputs simultaneously?
Yang Cai, CEO and president, VisualOn: Modern playout systems are adopting software-defined, cloud-native architectures to dynamically spin up channels across platforms without duplicate hardware. This unified approach lets operators manage linear broadcasts alongside FAST channels from a single interface, streamlining complex workflows like dynamic ad insertion. Ultimately, this reduces operational overhead and accelerates content monetization.
John Mailhot, SVP, product management, Imagine Communications: Historically, linear, FAST, and digital services have been supported by separate systems that evolved independently over time. However, today broadcasters are moving toward unified origination models where automation, orchestration, monitoring, and playout operate as a single environment, allowing content to be created, scheduled, distributed, and monetized across multiple platforms simultaneously. This approach not only improves operational efficiency, but it also provides the flexibility needed to respond to changing audience behavior and new revenue opportunities without adding layers of complexity.
Rick Young, SVP, head of global products, LTN: Playout systems are becoming more flexible as broadcasters look to maximize the value of their content across multiple platforms. A single source feed is increasingly expected to support linear television, FAST channels, streaming services, and future digital destinations. To support this, playout is becoming more virtualized and more closely integrated with traffic, advertising, and distribution systems. This allows broadcasters to tailor graphics, branding, and ad experiences for different audiences without creating separate workflows.
Adam Leah, creative director, Nxtedition: The old model of one playout server per channel just doesn’t hold economically when you’re trying to serve five or six destinations from the same operation, which is why the consolidation argument is becoming easier to make. When playout is integrated directly into the production workflow rather than bolted on separately, there’s no gap between the newsroom system and the transmission chain, and live graphics rendering with support for tools like Mapcreator, Singular Live, Viz Flowics and Rive means teams are not locked into a single graphics vendor. The platform can also publish and playout in different aspect ratios simultaneously, so the same content can be delivered correctly formatted for linear broadcast, social media and app distribution without manual intervention or separate workflows.
Graham Sharp, VP, sales and marketing, BCNexxt: Newer playout systems offer a single point of management control for all distribution formats. This helps broadcasters consolidate silos and reduce costs accordingly. Newer solutions come with other significant benefits such as standard browser-based UI’s, manage by exception user interfaces, login-based user permissions and the ability to create multiple configurable user interfaces looking at the same data. The future is much more about an IT approach to managing and presenting operational data, rather than fixed dedicated screens.
Miroslav Jeras, CTO, Pebble: While the market has seen a proliferation of point solutions optimized for specific output formats, whether traditional broadcast, FAST, or digital streaming, the operational reality is that most organizations need to serve several of these simultaneously. Pebble’s approach is to handle all these output types within a single playout platform, eliminating the cost and complexity of managing parallel systems. Importantly, this doesn’t mean a one-size-fits-all architecture: the platform scales channel density for simpler channels, allowing organizations to reduce per-channel costs where the output doesn’t demand full broadcast-grade complexity, while still applying that capability where it is needed.
Sara Biron, VP, sales and operations, Crispin Corporation, Sony Group: Master control isn’t new, but its modern use is enabling organizations to repurpose existing tools in more innovative ways. Providers like Crispin bridge digital and traditional OTA environments with unified solutions that reduce technology silos, streamline content workflows, and simplify playlist execution. This drives operational efficiencies and allows operators to rapidly launch FAST or OTT channels without the traditional complexity and overhead.
G Morgan, EVP, sales, Globecast Americas: Playout is shifting from a channel-based function to a broader content orchestration capability that supports linear feeds, FAST channels, OTT services, pop-up channels and digital outputs from more flexible workflows. These systems need to support traditional schedules while also enabling dynamic assembly, ad signaling, metadata enrichment, branding, versioning and delivery to multiple endpoints. The strongest approach is hybrid and modular, using dedicated infrastructure where resilience is critical, and cloud or virtualized playout where agility and faster time to market are required.
Where are the biggest risks in channel origination today?
John Mailhot, SVP, product management, Imagine Communications: The greatest risk isn’t a single point of failure, but the accumulation of complexity across the entire operation. Parallel playout systems, disconnected monitoring environments, separate workflows for linear and digital services, and the increasing number of content variants all create staff bottlenecks and opportunities for errors while making issues harder to identify and resolve quickly. In addition to reducing costs, this is another reason so many organizations are focusing on simplification, orchestration, and unified operational models — to improve reliability and resilience as services continue to expand.
Rick Young, SVP, head of global products, LTN: The biggest risk in channel origination is maintaining reliability as workflows become more distributed. Live channels often pass through multiple systems before reaching viewers, increasing the potential for signal issues, delays, or service disruptions. At the same time, broadcasters are launching more channels and supporting more distribution partners, which makes visibility into workflow performance increasingly important, particularly for always-on services where downtime is not an option. The ability to identify issues quickly, maintain service continuity, and monitor performance across the entire distribution chain has become a critical part of managing risk in modern channel origination.
Miroslav Jeras, CTO, Pebble: First, interoperability and end-to-end testing across increasingly complex multi-vendor chains remains a significant concern. With more systems, formats, and output destinations to integrate, the potential points of failure multiply and comprehensive testing becomes harder to achieve. Second, the shift from SDI to IP-based infrastructure has fundamentally changed the security exposure of broadcast operations; the challenge is not just recognizing that risk, but applying robust IT security practices to broadcast workflows without disrupting the tight timing and reliability requirements they depend on. Third, and perhaps most fundamentally, the skills demanded of engineers have changed profoundly.
How are organizations balancing automation with human oversight in master control?
Rick Young, SVP, head of global products, LTN: Tasks such as content versioning, ad signaling, blackout management, and channel scheduling can now be automated across multiple platforms and distribution partners. However, human oversight remains essential, especially in high-stakes live production such as sports, breaking news, and rights-sensitive content often requiring quick decisions that cannot be fully automated. Operators still play a critical role in monitoring workflows, managing exceptions, and ensuring content is delivered correctly.
Graham Sharp, VP, sales and marketing, BCNexxt: Human error is still the biggest risk in all playout services. Modern systems mitigate this in several ways: Separate content assembly from the point of playout and do it in advance, destressing the actual playout time. Automate as much as possible, including QC and present the data by exception — so operators are only checking reported errors, and they are doing so ahead of playout time. Design user interfaces to be as logical and easy to use as possible to avoid confusion at the time of playout.
Miroslav Jeras, CTO, Pebble: Automation is central to running modern master control efficiently, but human oversight remains essential, particularly when the unexpected happens. Pebble’s approach is to give operators the tools and information they need to manage multiple channels confidently, without being overwhelmed. This is achieved through a fully configurable layout system, where operators can design any number of personalized workspace layouts and switch between them instantly as their focus or operational needs change, ensuring each operator has the right information in front of them at the right time, whether they are overseeing a single high-profile live event or monitoring a large portfolio of channels.
Sara Biron, VP, sales and operations, Crispin Corporation, Sony Group: Master control’s core objective is to improve quality while driving operational efficiencies, enabling broadcast facilities to focus on what matters most: the content itself. Crispin continues to push innovation in this space through advanced monitoring tools that give operators deeper visibility into their systems. These capabilities allow teams to proactively identify and resolve issues, ranging from missing media assets to structural errors within playlists, before they impact on-air or digital delivery.
Sam Peterson, COO, BitCentral: Automation plays a vital role in helping organizations scale operations and manage growing complexity, but human oversight remains essential to maintaining confidence in the output. The goal isn’t to replace operators, but to equip them with better tools so they can focus on monitoring operations, responding when needed, and ensuring services run smoothly.
What workflows are most critical to maintaining consistency across multiple feeds and platforms?
Rick Young, SVP, head of global products, LTN: Reliable feed acquisition is the foundation of every downstream workflow. If content cannot be brought into production environments consistently and with low latency, it becomes difficult to maintain quality across every platform and destination. Broadcasters need reliable ways to move content into production and playout environments, whether on-premises or in the cloud, and distribute finished programming efficiently at scale. The most effective workflows connect acquisition, production, customization, and distribution within a single operational framework.
Audio, intercom and coordination
What role do intercom systems play in distributed production environments?
Nicole D’Antuono, head of sales, One Connect, IPC Systems: REMI and distributed production have become standard operating procedure across the broadcast industry, requiring teams to coordinate across venues, centralized production facilities, cloud environments, and even home offices. In this reality, communications systems are no longer simply supporting infrastructure – they are key to keeping people, workflows and operations aligned. As remote and cloud-based production models continue to evolve, intercom platforms increasingly serve as the connective layer that enables seamless collaboration regardless of location.
Peder Boberg, product owner, Intinor: In distributed workflows, flawless communication is just as vital as the video feed. Routing standalone intercom systems through bonded internet connections ensures that crew coordination survives unpredictable network conditions. This protects the entire production from single-point network failures.
Dave MacKinnon, VP, product management, Clear-Com: In distributed production, intercom is not just a coordination tool; it is the operational glue that keeps dispersed teams working like they are in the same facility. The role of the system is to give users secure, low-latency, familiar communications across hardware panels, wireless packs, and virtual clients so location stops being the limiting factor. Clear-Com sees its role as the facilitator of the production, enabling users to communicate how, when, and where they want as seamlessly as possible.
How are audio workflows changing as productions become more complex?
Dave Hoffman, business development manager, Americas, Blackmagic Design: Remote and distributed models have also changed how audio teams operate. Engineers and mixers may be working in different locations, requiring workflows that support collaboration while maintaining reliability and low latency. As with video, organizations are prioritizing systems that enable teams to access and manage content efficiently regardless of geography.
Chris Scheck, head of marketing content, Lawo: A1s already have a stunning number of tools and workflows at their disposal, the most evolved being remote immersive audio mixing from a fixed location irrespective of where the event takes place and where the immersive mix needs to be embedded. Some tools include level-based automixing, tracking-based automatic mic-channel leveling for crisp ball noises, automatable up- and downmixing for the simultaneous delivery of stereo, 5.1 and any immersive audio format up to 9.1.4. In other workflows, headless audio mixing without a console is the preferred approach.
Dave MacKinnon, VP, product management, Clear-Com: Productions need access to everything, all the time, and on demand when it comes to audio. In the past, this meant buying huge amounts of infrastructure for worst-case scenarios like breaking news, elections, or major sporting events. However, we’ve been working on making that math easier to handle by flexibly applying resources and scaling up or down as the production needs more or less. We recently released Eclipse EHX V15 with a resource control paradigm that allows user to flexibly assign and prioritize resources so they can still perform as expected.
Where are coordination breakdowns most likely to occur?
Nicole D’Antuono, head of sales, One Connect, IPC Systems: In live production, where every second matters, communication must be clear, reliable, and secure. Coordination challenges are most likely to arise when teams, workflows, and technologies are spread across multiple locations and platforms. Interoperability is often a key factor, as modern production environments combine legacy infrastructure with emerging technologies. When these systems cannot work together seamlessly, communication gaps can quickly become operational bottlenecks.
