Casey Viera is returning to KENS in San Antonio, Texas, as a sports anchor, nearly a year and a half after leaving the CBS affiliate.
Viera announced his return Thursday, Oct. 29, 2026, on social media, saying he was looking forward to rejoining the station where he previously spent more than three years.
“Happy to share I’ve returned back to @KENS5 as a Sports Anchor,” Viera wrote on X. “Thrilled to be back to make more memories in such an exciting time in San Antonio with a place that’s given me some of the best times of my career.”
Viera previously worked at the Tegna-owned station from January 2022 until May 2025, anchoring sports segments during the station’s 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts.
In an interview with MySA, Viera said his contract expired amid Tegna’s proposed merger with Nexstar Media Group. He said he had not wanted to leave the station.
“It was a place that I felt like when I started there, I just gelled immediately,” Viera told MySA. “And it’s the type of thing, when you’re in this field, that doesn’t come about a whole lot.”
Although he left KENS, Viera remained in San Antonio, citing family ties to the area. His wife has roots in nearby Floresville, Texas, and the couple has a young son.
During his time away from local television news, Viera continued working in sports broadcasting.
He served as a play-by-play announcer for athletic events at St. Mary’s University and Our Lady of the Lake University.
Since October 2025, he has also hosted the “Locked On Spurs” postgame show and “Spurs Squad Show,” covering the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs.
Viera, a Hofstra University graduate, will continue his work with “Locked On Spurs” alongside his responsibilities at KENS. The program is also affiliated with Tegna.
Viera said he was particularly looking forward to reconnecting with Spurs fans and bringing sports coverage to viewers in San Antonio.
“Most people don’t get the opportunity that I get that I’ve received with this once, let alone twice,” Viera told MySA. “I just want people to know that the magnitude of the job, whatever it may be, doesn’t get beyond me. I enjoy what I do.”
