ESPN has launched ESPN JV, a new YouTube channel designed to introduce younger audiences to sports through original programming, animated characters, athlete appearances and interactive challenges.

The channel, whose name stands for Junior Varsity, is available at youtube.com/@ESPNJV and features family-friendly videos covering basketball, football, soccer, baseball, tennis and other sports.

The initiative expands ESPN’s digital programming strategy into children’s content, targeting younger viewers who increasingly discover entertainment and information through YouTube and other online video platforms rather than traditional television.

ESPN JV combines sports education with entertainment, using quizzes, challenges and athlete-focused videos to introduce children to different games, notable moments and personalities.

The channel is also designed to encourage participation, with videos inviting viewers to test their knowledge and engage with sports concepts rather than simply watch highlights or game coverage.

“ESPN JV is about creating an exciting entry point into sports for the next generation of fans,” said Celia Bouza, ESPN vice president of multiplatform video, in a statement.

“By combining ESPN’s connection to the biggest moments and personalities in sports with creative, interactive storytelling, we’re building a destination where kids can explore their interests, discover new sports and develop a lifelong love of the game.”

A central component of the new channel is “The Sports Explorers,” an original animated series featuring four characters collectively known as the ESPN Squad.

The characters — Ez, Shay, PJ and Nora — introduce young viewers to sports through stories intended to combine entertainment with basic information about games, athletes and sports culture.

ESPN Creative Studio developed the animated series in collaboration with WSC Studios, the creative production division of WSC Sports, a company specializing in sports video technology and content production.

The collaboration gives ESPN another format for creating programming that does not depend exclusively on live sports rights or traditional studio production.

By incorporating animated characters and recurring personalities, ESPN can develop content that remains relevant beyond individual games or sports seasons.

The launch also reflects a broader shift among sports media companies toward building relationships with audiences before they become regular consumers of live sports programming.

YouTube provides a distribution platform that allows ESPN to reach children and families without requiring a cable subscription or access to the network’s other streaming services.

For ESPN, the approach creates opportunities to introduce its brand to viewers who may have little familiarity with its traditional television channels, studio programs or live game coverage.

The programming also differs from much of ESPN’s existing digital output, which is generally built around highlights, analysis, breaking sports news and coverage of professional and college athletics.

ESPN JV instead emphasizes introductory explanations, accessible storytelling and participation, with content designed specifically for younger audiences.

The company said it plans to add new videos regularly, expanding the channel’s collection of original programming, sports challenges and animated features.
