CNN has entered into a multiyear strategic partnership with Google that will allow the technology company to use additional rights to CNN content in experimental artificial intelligence features, while providing compensation to the news organization for the use of its journalism.
Announced Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, the agreement is intended to explore how Google’s generative AI products can help audiences discover and engage with CNN reporting.
Under the arrangement, CNN will provide expanded content rights for use in certain Google products, allowing the companies to experiment with new approaches to news discovery and audience engagement.
The agreement also establishes a commercial framework for compensating CNN for the delivery and use of its intellectual property in connection with AI products.
“With this partnership we’re unlocking new pathways for audiences to access CNN’s unparalleled journalism while being compensated for the delivery and use of our unique intellectual property in connection with AI products,” said Sam Felix, CNN senior vice president of strategic partnerships and business development, in a statement.
“Google’s innovation with generative AI has changed how people discover information and content, and now those tools will help us explore new ways to discover and engage audiences.”
The announcement comes as news organizations increasingly negotiate agreements with artificial intelligence companies over how their reporting can be incorporated into AI-generated responses, search results and other automated information services.
For publishers and broadcasters, those arrangements present both distribution opportunities and questions about how audiences will interact with original reporting when AI systems can summarize or present information without requiring users to visit a news organization’s website.
CNN’s agreement reflects an effort to participate in the development of those technologies while establishing commercial terms for the use of its content.
The network said the partnership is consistent with its broader AI strategy, which emphasizes protecting its intellectual property while exploring opportunities to use the technology.
CNN also confirmed that it has multiple existing commercial AI partnerships and continues discussions with other companies it considers responsible participants in the industry.
The Google agreement could have implications for how television news organizations distribute their journalism beyond traditional broadcasts, websites and streaming platforms.
As AI-powered search and conversational interfaces become additional ways for consumers to find information, broadcasters face decisions about how to make their reporting available through those systems while maintaining attribution, audience relationships and revenue.
For CNN, the partnership creates an opportunity to test whether AI-assisted discovery can direct users toward its reporting and expand engagement with its journalism.
The announcement did not identify the specific Google products or experimental features that will incorporate CNN content, nor did it disclose the financial terms of the agreement.
CNN also did not specify whether the arrangement includes access to video archives, transcripts, live coverage or other particular categories of content.
The companies have not announced a timetable for introducing consumer-facing features developed under the partnership.
