CBS News chief reportedly in talks with Chris Cuomo

CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss is reportedly exploring bringing former CNN anchor and current NewsNation host Chris Cuomo to the network as she continues reshaping its on-air lineup.

Weiss has spoken with Cuomo about a potential role at CBS News, according to Status, which first reported the discussions. The two have met in person, including over a meal, and have exchanged text messages, according to the report.

A move, however, could be difficult in the near term. Cuomo signed a multiyear contract extension with NewsNation in December 2024 and continues to host the network’s weeknight prime-time program, “Cuomo.” He also launched “Cuomo Mornings” on SiriusXM this year.

Neither CBS News nor Cuomo has publicly confirmed that a deal is being negotiated. 

It was also not immediately clear what role Cuomo might take at CBS, though he could take a chair on “CBS Mornings,” which has a slot open after co-host Tony Dokoupil left for “CBS Evening News” in January 2023, according to some separate reports. That would mean he would join co-anchors Gayle King and Nate Burleson, assuming no other talent changes happen. 

The discussions come as Weiss looks to add recognizable television personalities following a series of changes at CBS News.

Cuomo joined CNN in 2013 as a co-anchor of its new morning show, “New Day,” before moving to evenings in 2018 with “Cuomo Prime Time.”

CNN fired him in December 2021 following an investigation into his involvement in advising his brother, then-New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, as the governor responded to sexual harassment allegations.

Cuomo joined NewsNation in 2022 and became one of the Nexstar-owned cable network’s most prominent personalities. His program was NewsNation’s highest-rated show by the end of 2025.

The reported interest also comes after Cuomo dismissed the possibility of joining NBC News’ “Meet the Press.” Responding to speculation on X on Sunday, Cuomo said he would not take the job and criticized the format of Sunday political programs.
