Olympic rings start appearing in NBC’s updated peacock bug

It’s the start of an Olympics year — so that means it’s time for NBC to switch over its bug — the first time out with the redesigned peacock.

Back in December 2022, NBC started rolling out a redrawn version of its longtime peacock icon along with an updated logotype using a thicker version of the network’s bespoke NBC Tinker.

The network has been rolling out the new logo across multiple brands and platforms, including most recently bringing it to NBC News Now, MSNBC, and CNBC, with each of these networks getting updated logos and typography.

Starting in December 2023, the network began inserting a version of the bug with the Olympic rings below it.

This has been something that’s been done during Olympics years for as long as memory (though it was yanked midway through 2020 when the games were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic).

For this time out, the network used white rings with a similar subtle full-color animated peacock above it. The “NBC” lettering has been removed, which means the logo is now more square or vertical as opposed to horizontal.

That said, the entire bug, with rings, becomes semi-transparent during the bulk of programming.

The design is also worked into the promo snipes that the network uses in combination with the bug, typically when returning from commercial breaks.

The 2024 Summer Olympics are July 26, 2024 to Sunday, Aug. 11, 2024, in Paris.
