During the recent Promax|BDA awards, Clickspring Design was honored for its CNN Election set design.
CNN charged Clickspring with realizing two primary objectives for election coverage. First: to communicate unassailable editorial expertise. The headline “CNN = Politics” established an equation for all design and production related to the election season.
The secondary objective was to create a branded alignment between multiple events — twelve debates, five primaries and election night. Developing live events with audiences ranging from 200 to 2,000 in size, and addressing the realities of live video production — two very different lenses — needed careful synchronization.

CNN’s HD feed uses for ‘panel scorecard’
TVNewser reports on a new technology that CNN used on its HD feed during Friday night’s debate coverage.
Taking advantage of the increased sceen real estate, CNN added realtime data from its political panel using circle-shaped graphics that were placed in the HD wing area.

This background is suppose to be of grass, but watching it appears to be one giant key wall. Throughout most of the convention patriotic images and red graphics were shown.
The Democrats also had a solid blue screen at a few times, but the majority of the time an image was projected.
With giant screens come giant power…

GOP gears up for convention

The Republicans are gearing up for their convention in St. Paul, Minn., but unlike the Democrats, the Republicans’ stage will be much sparser.

The stage is only four feet off the ground, unlike the Democrats’ towering setup. The key element of the Republicans setup is a 30 by 50 foot video screen directly behind the main podium.
It will be interesting to see how news organizations adapt to this different setup. From the initial shots, the floor space is at a premium and there is no cable cam in sight.
NBC updates election graphics
NBC has slowly begun rolling out updated graphics for the upcoming election.
The original version did not have the shiny highlights on the various elements and used black bars behind information instead of the red bar. MSNBC has also begun using some new election graphics that more closely match these.
Convention coverage on TV and Online Part 2
As the convention rolls on, more and more networks are showing their full hands.
MSNBC has a secondary desk upstairs of their platform for Keith and Chris. NBC News also has new graphics for tonight’s convention coverage, unfortunately they are not as good as their previous graphics and do not match any other NBC election graphics. (more…)
