Fox’s coverage of 2026 World Cup final set U.S. soccer viewership record

Fox’s coverage of Spain’s victory over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final averaged 38.9 million viewers Sunday, July 19, 2026, making it the most-watched soccer telecast in U.S. television history, according to Nielsen figures released by Fox Sports.
The audience surpassed the previous record of 33.1 million viewers set by the United States-Belgium Round of 16 match earlier in the tournament.
Viewership for the final peaked at 51.7 million from 5:45 to 6 p.m. ET as Spain secured a 1-0 victory in extra time. The match-only window on Fox averaged 42.5 million viewers.
The full telecast averaged 132% more viewers than the 2022 final between Argentina and France, which aired on a Sunday morning and drew 16.8 million viewers. It was up 240% from the 11.4 million who watched France defeat Croatia in the 2018 final.
Fox Sports’ four-hour “FIFA World Cup Live” pregame show averaged 2.9 million viewers.
Tournament audience
Fox Sports averaged 7.7 million viewers across 104 matches on Fox, FS1 and Tubi, making the 2026 tournament the most-watched World Cup in U.S. television history.
The average increased 116% from the 3.6 million viewers who watched the 2022 tournament and 179% from the 2.8 million average for the 2018 World Cup.
The third-place match between France and England averaged 13.1 million viewers Saturday, July 18, 2026, setting a U.S. record for a men’s World Cup third-place game. The telecast peaked at 18.5 million viewers from 6:45 to 7 p.m. ET.
France-England increased 232% from the 4 million viewers who watched Croatia play Morocco for third place in 2022. It was up 330% from the 3.1 million audience for Belgium-England in 2018.
Two matches averaged more than 30 million viewers: Spain-Argentina and United States-Belgium.
Five matches topped 20 million:
- Spain vs. Argentina, final
- United States vs. Belgium, Round of 16
- United States vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Round of 32
- Norway vs. England, quarterfinal
- Mexico vs. England, Round of 16
Eleven matches averaged more than 15 million viewers. Nine Fox telecasts exceeded the previous U.S. men’s World Cup record of 16.8 million viewers set by the 2022 final.
Digital and social coverage
Fox Sports said its World Cup coverage generated more than 17.2 billion content views across its digital and social platforms, making it the company’s most-viewed digital event.
Tournament content produced 16.5 billion social impressions. More than 2,560 Fox Sports videos received at least 1 million views, while the company added more than 10 million social media followers during the 39-day tournament.
Content surrounding the final generated 542 million social video views July 19, the largest single-day total reported by Fox Sports.
The company’s first “Always On” World Cup livestream ran for 974 consecutive hours beginning June 11. It was distributed through YouTube, TikTok, Tubi, FOXSports.com and the Fox Sports app.
The stream generated 1.2 billion minutes of viewing. YouTube viewers posted more than 2 million comments, and half of the platform’s livestream audience watched with the chat feature enabled.
Time spent with World Cup editorial coverage on FOXSports.com and the Fox Sports app increased 73% from the 2022 tournament. Fox Sports produced more than 300 livestreaming shows, published more than 27,000 social media posts and wrote more than 1,300 stories during the event.
James Corden program
“FIFA World Cup on Fox After Hours With James Corden” ranked first among broadcast late-night talk shows with men ages 18-49, 18-34 and 25-54 during the tournament, according to live-plus-same-day ratings covering June 11 through July 19, 2026.
The program also delivered the six highest-rated late-night telecasts among men ages 18-34 during that period.
