Evening newscasts cover train derailment

“NBC Nightly News” kicked off its Monday edition with anchor Lester Holt standing in the “vista wall” area with the text “Deadly Train Disaster” next top him, a name that was also used on the show’s tease.

The broadcast also used its typically gray-blue background to display still photos from the scene.

NBC also went to the extent of creating a full 3D animation of the crash that showed a variety of angles of the scene as the trains tumbled off the track to the freeway below.

After its first package on the story, NBC transitioned directly to a second package without going back to Holt in the studio.

This package boasted additional image backgrounds along with bright yellow text emphasizing certain points.
