6 ABC Action News, WPVI, launched the ABC Owned Television Stations group graphics package on March 12, 2024.  Unlike the others using the package, WPVI continues its tradition of montage news opens with “Move Closer to Your World” serving as the theme.

The design comes after years of development by ABC, Vivid Zero, Rocket Surgery and Ross Video, incorporating market research from SmithGeiger along with control room and technical upgrades at each station.

ABC owned stations’ graphics package leverages purposeful motion, 3D

The broadcast design mixes a flat design aesthetic for the insert graphics with unique 3D environments that can feature topical imagery and real-time data for the intros and segment opens. The overall design aims to convey a wealth of information without overwhelming viewers.

Photos, video clips, and dynamic animation in a grid layout create a visually rich ‘bento box’ of information in the primary opens while integrating headline and temperature data. 

Initially appearing in weather graphics at WLS in Chicago, the design was gradually introduced across the other ABC-owned stations, replacing an assortment of custom designs. 

The graphics are powered by Ross Video’s XPression platform with deep integration in Overdrive for automation.
