Also, orange has been added to the graphics to match the logo. Continue reading to see the previous and new opening.

CNN.com adds 360-degree Haiti feature
Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

haiti360

CNN.com has added a 360-degree view of Haiti. The unique part of this view is that it was taken from a vehicle driving down a street and users can pause or even pan around while the clip is still moving.

It’s an interesting application that’s does do a good job of “placing” the user at the scene of the news, but could benefit from a bit more information. One possible improvement would be “hot spots” where users can click or hover over to get more details. For example, perhaps a location where a rescue took place.

Check out the interactive clip here.

New CNN Center studio?
Monday, January 18th, 2010

NewscastStudio has received pictures from a tipster of what he or she says is the new CNN studio in Atlanta.

Inside Cable News previously reported CNN is constructing a new set for its domestic network at its Atlanta headquarters. In addition, a large part of the current newsroom, located camera right, has been walled off for months now, though it’s not clear if this is the location of the new studio.

The set in the photos appears to be very large with many modern elements. The set looks like it will be heavily stocked with technology, including a large array of flat panel monitors in one area.

Though not confirmed to be of CNN, there is one key clue in the photos: a construction cone stenciled with “C-N-N.”

In terms of time spent watching video, CNN Digital brought in 215.5 million minutes that month.

Ambitious ‘Strategy Room’ Webcasts stream eight hours of content a day
Monday, November 9th, 2009

113131-foxAdWeek has an in-depth profile on Fox News Channel’s “Strategy Room” initiative, a venture that provides eight hours of live Web streaming video a day.

Online Monday through Friday, the program originates from the 14th floor of Fox News Channel’s offices in New York City from what is described as a “compact” set.

The set, shown at right, is more fleshed out than many Web show sets, complete with a panel desk (that can, amazingly, squeeze six people around it) and several plasma screens along with a branded header element. The Strategy Room, also uses a second “room” — a studio that contains a more laid back set with brick walls, no desk and funky decorative items hanging from the wall.

Originally part of the channel’s 2008 election coverage, the article reports Fox is now using this a key component of its online strategy and may be looking to expanding the Web stream’s programming in the future.

The naming choice is rather interesting since it closely mirrors CNN’s moniker “The Situation Room,” which itself was often confused with “The Situation,” a show hosted by Tucker Carlson on MSNBC that was eventually rebranded as just “Tucker.”

Breaking down the new CNN.com
Monday, November 2nd, 2009

video-play

Webdesignerdepot.com has posted an interesting article breaking down the new CNN.com Web site and discussing the overall changes made.

The new design is beautiful, clean, organized and well-structured. It invites the eye to scan and find something interesting with the goal of clicking through to another page.

The previous design was somewhat cluttered and not very inviting; the content looked liked it was being forced into an unstructured space. The new layout is very different and embraces a number of modern web design and usability best practices and trends.

New CNN.com adds some clutter, emphasizes photos better
Monday, October 26th, 2009

cnn11The new CNN.com rolled out over the weekend, but today seems to mark the site’s official debut.

In this incarnation, CNN has stayed on the simpler side of news site design, though this version is a bit more cluttered than the old site.

One of the most significant change is the switch to a bold read header bar with reversed CNN logo that is centered rather than left aligned like logos on many sites. This header sometimes seems a bit distracting since its visual weight is increased by the use of such a bright color across the entire page.

I’m glad to see CNN kept the “story highlights” bulleted summary of stories, though its new location on the left column is a bit hard to find at a glance.
