According to preliminary figures released by NAB, attendance for this year’s show was down by more than 20,000 people.

The 2009 show attracted 83,842 attendees, compared to the 105,259 who made the trek to Las Vegas in 2008.

“With two days remaining, the NAB Show has been a phenomenal success by any measure in an otherwise challenging economy,” spun NAB Executive Vice President Dennis Wharton in a statement.

RTNDA noticeably smaller this year
Monday, April 20th, 2009

RTNDA had a noticeably smaller and less lively show floor this year.

New this year was a so-called “Networking Lounge,” a small collection of sofas and chairs with a plasma television, free popcorn and Wi-Fi Internet access.

The show floor was also rearranged, placing the exhibitor area closer to the Hilton casino and the RTNDA offices more in the area where the booths were in previous years.

Booth numbers and sizes were reduced as well, with almost an entire aisle filled with non-profit organization, at least one of which appeared to be a no-show Monday.

RTNDA has been facing tough challenges with the stalling economy and falling membership. Barbara Cochran, the organization’s president, has announced her retirement, leaving the group at somewhat of a crossroads as it pauses to determine how to proceed. The organization also announced it will cease publishing “Communciator” magazine this summer, moving it to an online-only format.

RTNDA’s ‘Communicator’ history as of this summer
Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

In an interview with TVNewsday, RTNDA has announced that “Communicator” magazine will cease publication this summer.

The move comes just a few months after RTNDA redesigned the magazine and cut the number of issues it publishes per year.

In the interview, Ed Esposito, the chairman of RTNDA, mentions that the organization will be looking for ways to improve its online coverage. That’s a message that we’ve heard before but never really came to fruition. When RTNDA last redesigned its Web site, there was talk of improved online content, including a “solutions” area highlighting products and services related to TV news — an section of the site that sits mostly empty.

In reality, the site isn’t much more than a repository of press releases and overviews of various RTNDA initiatives and research projects. RTNDA did make a move to boost the Communicator section of the site, which was a welcome change. It will be interesting to see how much, if any, Communicator material becomes “online only” once its print counterpart closes shop.

Communicator is supported by advertising, which leans heavily toward set designers, music companies and motion graphics firms.
