NBC News Digital creates original video unit

NBC News Digital Group is adding its own in-house production team dedicated to creating video for social, mobile and Web audiences.

The group will be known as the original video unit.

The unit will create video for various brands across the NBC News Digital Group, including NBC News Digital and Today Digital.

Bill Smee, who joins NBC News in September, will lead the new team as executive producer of original video production.

Smee, who previously was executive producer of Slate V, the video arm of Slate.com, will report to Gregory Gittrich, vice president of news and product, NBC News digital and executive editor, NBCNews.com.

The new unit will focus on creating branded video series, extending NBC News’ storytelling across digital platforms with an emphasis on mobile and social audiences. The digital video franchises will feature journalists from across all of NBC News’ shows and platforms.

“The NBCUniversal News Group is already an industry leader in streaming clips from our television programing. We will now have an additional focus on original video that extends the news division’s on-air and digital brands,” said Vivian Schiller, senior vice president and chief digital officer of NBC News, in a statement.
