NBC has greenlit a new game show series based on the popular word game Wordle.

The show, which will be titled “Wordle,” will be produced by Universal Television Alternative Studio, Electric Hot Dog and The New York Times.

“Wordle is one of the most successful and culturally resonant games of the past decade,” said Sharon Vuong, executive vice president, unscripted programming, NBC, in a statement. “This series is a natural extension of NBC’s legacy in the game show space, and with the incredible Savannah at the helm and our partners at UTAS, Electric Hot Dog and The New York Times, we’re excited to bring a smart, joyful and distinctly NBC take to this global phenomenon.”

“Today” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, who herself is an avid Wordle player, will take on the role of host of the game show.

The show will use a new take on the popular Wordle game, which centers around having players figure out a five-letter word based on strategic skills and process of elimination.

Billed as a “fast-paced” and “supersized” spin on the digital game, the game will be played using “squads.”

The network said the show will take place in the so-called “Wordle Arena” and feature an undefined cash prize.

“I feel very honored to be working with Savannah Guthrie on this show,” said Jimmy Fallon, who created Electric Hot Dog, in a statement. “Savannah has that rare combination of intelligence, charm, and warmth that makes everyone feel instantly welcome. And she obviously knows how to host a show. I am SUPER PROUD and HAPPY and I think we developed a SOLID GAMER for PRIME-time.

Wordle started as a digital game that quickly went viral across the globe starting in 2021. The New York Times bought the game in 2022 and merged it into its New York Times Games brand.

The production is currently looking for Wordle-obssesed contestants, who can visit wordle.castingcrane.com for details and to apply.

The network plans to begin producing shows later in 2026 with a premiere date sometime in 2027.
