Cheaper remote production changes what’s worth covering
B-league and C-league sport productions were traditionally cost prohibitive. Now the cost comes down far enough that there is real economic value in producing them. You can monetize them, build higher channel counts, and feed FAST channels that never had coverage before. Cycling is a good example. It has always drawn a crowd in Europe, and it is now finding one in the United States because these events are finally cheap enough to produce. Table tennis and other niche sports that never made the economic cut become viable too.
None of that new coverage happens without IP. We used to book satellite time, run microwave feeds, or pay for expensive dedicated connectivity. Today we take bonded cellular, low-latency encoders on WAN networks, and primary-plus-backup internet over commoditized infrastructure for granted. Cable modems, Starlink dishes, cell phones. Those technologies drove the cost down, and we could never have done any of it without being IP in the first place.
The catch: Cheaper IP links come with no SLA
IP brought the cost down, but it also changed what you can count on. When a broadcaster brings in a dedicated circuit, say a 100-gigabit link connecting two facilities for the World Cup, that circuit comes with a service level agreement: guaranteed function, guaranteed quality. The moment you switch to cell phones, cable modems, or regional gigabit connections, those SLAs are gone. If the capacity is there, you broadcast. If it is not, you have a problem. Cheaper connections carry real risk.
IP monitoring sees it going bad before the audience can
That risk is exactly what IP monitoring is for. Here is how it works: the platform watches the video and audio in the remote field, then watches the same content again when it arrives at your studio or data center, after it has been encoded and sent down the link. The valuable part is the delta, the change between what you created and what you received. Catch that change early and you can act before the link ever drops.

Monitoring watches all of that in real time. When the jitter jumps, you know you have a network problem, and you can switch to a backup at a time of your choosing. You pitch to a commercial break and cut over, so the production never goes bad in front of the audience.

Catching that jitter is not just a technical win. It is a brand win. The quality of your production is your brand. A smaller audience does not mean a smaller-quality production is acceptable. You cannot put jittery video, pixelation, or dropped audio on air and expect your brand to absorb it, and you should not have to sacrifice that quality just because you moved to cheaper infrastructure.
