CNN has named Brittany Shammas a reporter on its national news team, where she will develop enterprise stories, field reports and accountability journalism for the network’s digital audience.

Based in Washington, D.C., Shammas will focus on original reporting that examines the people, places and broader forces behind major domestic news stories.

Shammas joins CNN after seven years at The Washington Post. She most recently worked as a local enterprise reporter, producing narrative and accountability stories centered on the Washington region. She previously covered national breaking news as part of the newspaper’s general assignment team.

Her reporting at the Post included natural disasters, mass shootings and the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before joining the Post in 2019, Shammas spent eight years reporting in Florida. She covered education and public safety for the Naples Daily News and the South Florida Sun Sentinel before becoming a staff writer at Miami New Times.

Her investigation into deaths connected to a for-profit correctional health care company received a Sigma Delta Chi Award.

Shammas is a native of western Michigan and a graduate of Michigan State University.
