Philly chief met Cecily Tynan retiring after 30 years

Cecily Tynan, the longtime chief meteorologist for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s WPVI, will retire after more than three decades with the ABC-owned station.

Tynan announced her retirement July 23, 2026. Her final appearance on “6ABC Action News” is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 31, 2026.

She joined WPVI in 1995 as its first weekend meteorologist and a general assignment reporter before becoming chief meteorologist in 2009. She currently delivers forecasts for the station’s 5, 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts and a streaming newscast at 6:30 p.m.

Tynan covered major weather events across the Philadelphia region, including Hurricane Sandy, the Blizzard of 1996, tornadoes, floods and periods of record heat. She also appeared in seasonal weather specials and contributed to ABC News programs, including “Good Morning America” and “World News Tonight.”

“I’m proud of the work we’ve done and thankful to 6abc viewers for trusting me with their weather forecasts,” Tynan said. She said she plans to travel, water ski in Florida and spend more time with her husband, two adult children and three rescue dogs.

John Morris, WPVI’s general manager, called Tynan a trusted voice for viewers and a leader in the newsroom.

“Whether guiding us through storms or being part of our holiday traditions, Cecily has been a part of our lives for a long time,” Morris is quoted as saying on a story on the station’s website.

Before joining WPVI, Tynan worked at KTNV in Las Vegas, Nevada, and WDBJ in Roanoke, Virginia. She graduated from Washington and Lee University and later completed meteorology training to earn the American Meteorological Society’s seal of approval.

Outside broadcasting, Tynan has competed as a professional duathlete, marathon runner, triathlete and tournament slalom water-skier. She finished among the top 10 in her age group at the 2003 Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
