Broadcast monitoring is moving beyond eyes on glass

The traditional multiviewer answered a straightforward question: Is the signal there?

Operators could look across a wall of video tiles, confirm that pictures were moving, check that audio meters were active and identify obvious failures before they reached air.

That job has not disappeared. It is simply no longer enough.

“The formats have multiplied from 2110 and MXL to NDI, JPEG XS, MPEG-TS, OTT, and customers need to monitor all of them from one place, correlating data and helping operators react in real time,” said Michael Demb, VP, product strategy at TAG Video Systems.

Modern broadcast and streaming operations span IP networks, software services, cloud resources and multiple distribution platforms. A picture may be present while timing is unstable, metadata is missing, the wrong version is being delivered or a network condition is moving toward failure.

The multiviewer is therefore being asked to explain far more than what can be seen in the video.

“The primary limitation of traditional multiviewers is that they were built for a world where operators mainly needed to confirm that audio and video were present,” said John Mailhot, senior vice president of product management at Imagine Communications.

Modern systems need to combine video with signal health, metadata, routing information and operational context, Mailhot said. That changes the product from a visual confidence tool into something closer to an operational awareness platform.

A picture shows the symptom

The shift is clearest when a signal fails across a distributed workflow.

A conventional multiviewer can show that a remote feed has frozen or disappeared. It may not be able to tell an operator whether the problem began at the source, along an internet transport path, inside a cloud service or at the decoding endpoint.

“Traditional multiviewers fall short primarily at the boundary of ground-to-cloud live contribution paths,” said Ali Hodjat, senior director of marketing at Telestream.

A video mosaic can alert an operator to the failure, Hodjat said, but it cannot necessarily identify where packet loss, jitter or another network problem occurred. That distinction matters during live production. Seeing that something is wrong is useful. Knowing where to act is what shortens the outage.

The multiviewer increasingly has to combine eyes-on-glass monitoring with historical telemetry, network data and software diagnostics. It must help operators move from symptom to root cause.

More than video and audio

Erik Ott, CEO of Mediaproxy, described traditional multiviewers as too narrowly focused on video and audio.

Modern monitoring has to extend across the distribution chain and include richer views of metadata, compliance and system status, he said. The interface must help operators understand the delivered program, not merely the output of one device or stage.

“We’re seeing more demand for deep QC capabilities, like HDR quality control for streaming, and for tools that go beyond basic alarms into understanding what the data is telling you. The goal is to give operators confidence that the right content is in the right format with the right metadata before anything goes out the door,” said Demb.

That requirement reflects the expanding definition of signal confidence.

A stream may need the correct captions, audio configuration, SCTE-35 markers, branding and format for a particular platform. It may need to conform to technical and regulatory requirements. It may also need to be compared with what viewers are actually receiving.

“Customers are asking us: am I sending the right streams with the right technical parameters for each platform? Assurance about signal means being able to answer yes to all of those questions, not just some of them,” said Demb.

Those conditions cannot be represented by a wall of pictures alone.

The interface has to scale, too

The design of the multiviewer is changing alongside the information it displays.

Fixed hardware systems placed practical limits on the number and type of sources that could be shown. IP-based systems can support changing layouts, compressed and uncompressed feeds and a larger number of software-defined tiles.

“IP-based multiviewer apps allow adding more tiles to the layout and routing the desired video streams there using an intuitive software application,” said Chris Scheck, head of marketing content at Lawo.

That flexibility allows the screen to adapt to the production rather than forcing every operation into a fixed display. It also creates an opportunity to place technical data beside the relevant signal instead of separating pictures, alarms and network information across different systems.

The risk is that adding more information simply produces a denser wall.

The product still has to help operators decide what matters. A useful operational dashboard cannot treat every alert, metric and metadata field as equally urgent.

Confidence still begins with the picture

The broader role does not make the visual multiviewer obsolete.

“It means two things,” said Charlie Dunn, executive vice president of products at Telestream, describing modern signal confidence.

The first is still the ability to look at a multiviewer and confirm that the expected feeds and audio are present. The second is automated surveillance for problems that operators cannot easily see or troubleshoot from the video display.

That combination may define the next version of the category.

The multiviewer remains a visual tool, but the picture becomes one layer within a larger operational view. It must show the content, describe the systems supporting it and help explain what changed when something goes wrong.

At that point, “multiviewer” may be an increasingly incomplete name.

The product is becoming the place where operators understand the state of the media operation itself.
