One live feed is not enough for modern sports broadcasting

Traditionally, the world feed provided a logical centre for live sports broadcasting. Producers created one definitive version of an event and delivered it to rights partners across different territories. It was a model built on clearer geographical boundaries, relatively consistent expectations of how sports coverage should look and a much smaller number of outlets.
The demands on live productions have changed considerably. A single game can appear on traditional television, streaming services, FAST channels and social platforms and sometimes in several formats at once. An AP-NORC poll published in September 2025 found that around four in 10 Americans who follow sports extremely or very closely use both traditional pay television and a sports-only streaming platform.
Those changing expectations do not mean that every fan wants a radically different broadcast. Many viewers still value the familiar, polished experience they know and enjoy, while others are looking for coverage that reflects their language or relationship with a sport. Modern production models therefore need to preserve the quality of the main broadcast while giving rights holders enough flexibility to different audiences efficiently.
Separate production for every platform or market is commercially unsustainable. Rights costs continue to rise, while operational demands are increasing faster than most organizations can expand their teams. A modern production model must begin with a strong core production that can be adapted efficiently into multiple live versions.
Creating more value from every production
Versioning itself is familiar to sports broadcasters, since rights partners have long added local commentary or graphics to a shared world feed. The scale and sophistication of that process have changed, however, and a strong core production can now support a much wider range of simultaneous outputs. Rights holders can introduce market-specific advertising and platform-specific presentation, all while maintaining the quality and editorial integrity of the main production.
Modern versioning also changes how quickly those outputs can be created and distributed. Additional feeds can be prepared around the requirements of a particular audience or destination without recreation of the entire production workflow. Each version can feel relevant without requiring a separate crew or distribution infrastructure.
Greater flexibility creates new commercial possibilities because adaptable content is more attractive to buyers with specific market requirements. Commercial teams can build sponsorship packages and advertising propositions around individual markets rather than forcing every opportunity into a universal feed. As fans engage more deeply with relevant coverage, customization is becoming an increasingly important part of rights negotiations and long-term monetization.
Keeping expansion manageable
The growth of alternate feeds can create another layer of production complexity when every output requires its own workflow. Scalable versioning therefore depends on an architecture that removes repetitive manual work and allows additional outputs to be launched through consistent processes. Production teams should be able to increase the number of feeds they deliver without increasing the operational complexity attached to every event.

Artificial intelligence will contribute significantly to future workflows, although its value will depend on accessible data and systems designed to use it consistently.
Building coverage around the fan
Future sports workflows will increasingly be designed around the experience each viewer wants to receive. Traditional broadcasts will remain valuable for fans who prefer a polished and familiar program, while digital platforms will continue developing more interactive or specialized formats. A reliable production foundation can support those different experiences when customization is incorporated into the workflow from the start.
A versioned production model allows rights holders to respond more quickly as audience behavior and distribution opportunities change. New markets can be served through adaptations of an established production, while emerging formats can be tested without compromising the main broadcast. Production investment becomes more commercially sustainable because the cost of the core event is shared across a wider range of outputs.
Greater flexibility can also bring rights holders closer to their audiences, viewing habits will continue to evolve, so broadcasters need the ability to adjust an experience without redesigning the entire production chain. Organizations that understand how fans want to engage can use versioning to strengthen loyalty and create new commercial value.
The next competitive advantage will belong to rights owners that can use their production resources more intelligently. A high-quality primary feed remains essential because every alternate experience depends on its consistency and reliability. Its role has expanded from serving as a finished product to providing the flexible basis for a growing range of relevant and commercially valuable viewing experiences.
