FOX Business Network recently launched “Data Wizard,” a real-time touch-screen control system, developed by VDS Technology in conjunction with FOX Graphics Engineering personnel.

The system is used primarily by Liz Claman’s “Countdown to the Closing Bell” which airs afternoons on FOX Business Network. The 103 inch touch-screen displays live market data with interactive 3D charting, stock comparison and annotation tools.

“From the beginning, we focused on making the system fast and easy to use by on-air talent. We wanted to deliver a tool that makes the telling of each story more compelling and informative,”said Mike Dilworth, CTO of Video Design Software. ” The single touch control aspect makes the Data Wizard unique, and allows the operator to quickly point or touch and always bring focus to the specific data of interest.”

Speed’s ‘NASCAR Race Hub’ to debut new set next week
Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

matt_crafton_m

Speed will unveil a new set for it’s nightly NASCAR program “NASCAR Race Hub” next Monday.

The set, designed by Seth Easter Design, will include an interview station and a news station in addition to other changes.

Seth Easter Design has also worked on projects for ABC News, Mark Burnett Productions and WLIW-TV/WNET-TV studios at Lincoln Center.

The previous set, seen above, featured many areas for interviews, but felt almost too thrown together for a major sports network and lacked the bang of an ESPN set.

Weather.com unveils new site in beta

The Weather Channel has launched a new beta version of Weather.com

The new site is cleaner than the previous and features larger maps and images. The site also does a good job of matching TWC’s new on air branding.

The site also does a better job of ad integration, unlike some competitors.

Too bad the designers of this site couldn’t help sister network MSNBC with its recent redesign.

MSNBC hires new ad agency
Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

The Star-Tribune is reporting that Minneapolis-based Mono has been hired as the new ad agency for MSNBC.

Mono is the agency behind MSNBC’s sister cable channel USA Network’s “Characters welcome” tagline. That tagline apparently sits well with both USA Network management and viewers — it’s been in use for five years.

NewscastStudio commenters disapprove of MSNBC.com redesign
Thursday, July 15th, 2010

MSNBC.com’s new story page design isn’t going over well with NewscastStudio readers.

Our June 28 report on the new look has garnered 23 comments — all of them negative. It’s also worth nothing that 23 is a record for number of comments on a NewscastStudio blog post.

Many of the comments also include sentiments about switching to an alternative news site, says as the user “Marco,” who writes: “I dislike the new design because it appears like a cluttered mess and forces me to click more than needed just to read a story. I’ve decided to switch to another news source website instead but will miss MSNBC.”

Other key comments:

  • “I liken the new MSNBC layout to that of the Ford Nova. Huge blunder and hopefully short lived. Did they skip the end-user testing?” (”Jasmin”)
  • “The whole top of the MSNBC.com page is a waste of unwanted real estate. When I first saw it I reported it as a bug, I couldn’t believe it was intentional.” (”Charlie”)
  • “Was my home page won’t be much longer.” (”HPO”)
  • “The left-hand major news menu (U.S. News, Business, etc.) and fly-out topic headlines that appeared on every page is gone. I can no longer select a story from another topic quickly; nor can I see all headlines without clicking even one. Another big peeve: the “show/hide more text” story feature requires constant clicking; the greatly enlarged font requires much scrolling back to previous content in a long article.” (”Bajeha”)

CNBC uses Cisco TelePresence for some ‘talking heads’
Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

cnbc-telepresence-071310CNBC is now using Cisco’s TelePresence technology for some talking head interviews on various shows.

AdAge writes, “Cisco is not paying CNBC to use TelePresence screens on air, according to CNBC and NBC Universal executives; CNBC is actually leasing the equipment for its editorial and technology operations teams.”

MSNBC also uses TelePresence with “The Rachel Maddow Show.”

Using of this technology is similar to the use of Skype for interviews. They display the logo so viewers know it’s using a different technology than normal, but in many cases viewers won’t notice because of the quality of TelePresence video.

Is this a good move by CNBC? Maybe, as satellite time can be expensive, but it also comes off as advertising for Cisco.

Fox News Channel’s Glenn Beck took storytelling to a whole new level by taking a ride of a stage lift on the set of his show — all to prove a point about the GDP:

FoxNews.com rolls out new design

screen-shot-2010-06-16-at-12401-pm

Via WebNewser, Fox News has rolled out a new site with clean styling to compete with CNN and MSNBC.

The site is a change for Fox News, as its last site used text layered on images and was very cluttered. The new site is very clean and overall is a good redesign, on par with CNN and MSNBC.

One unique feature of the site is the ability to embed a Adobe Flash news ticker into any site. Is this a gimmick? Maybe, but I bet some sites will find it useful.

Inside Stephen Arnold Music’s CNN International work
Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

In a recent release, Stephen Arnold talked about his recent work for CNN International:

”I-Desk is about immersing viewers into breaking stories,” said Stephen Arnold, President of Stephen Arnold Music. ”Since the news can come from anywhere in the world, the theme needed to have a broad reach in terms of instrumentation and orchestration. So our job for a show like ‘I-Desk,’ is to maintain an international flavor, without skewing the sound too heavily towards any one region.”

For “Inside Africa,” Arnold had to create a compelling intro using local beats that worked with CNN’s existing brand.
