Charleston ABC takes wraps off sleek new studio

Sinclair owned WCHS-TV debuted its new Devlin Design Group set over the weekend.

The new set is a substantial change for the Charleston station, adding HD and many new bells and whistles.

“The new set is an obvious point of difference when compared to our competition; it elevates our people and our product to the next level, ” said Matt Snyder, news director at WCHS-TV. “When someone tunes in to sample what local news looks in this market, the choice is clear. I think our production supervisor said it best: Our competitors have a new set, we have a visual experience.”

The new set mixes copper and aluminum metals with warm cherry wood and textured stonework. Combining traditional materials with modern touches and backlit lighting, the new set features depth and many dynamic presentation areas.

Included with the set are multiple rolling pieces, including a presentation pod and a monitor cart with stonework and backlit elements.

“This set has so much more versatility than what we had previously. With multiple shot possibilities and a variety of performance areas, we have plenty of options that help our anchors and reporters to tell the story… and the layout of the set makes our studio look much bigger on television than it really is,” said Snyder.

The set includes both a large video wall and rear projection screen. The 4×2 video array is made of NEC monitors  and can be used for multiple purposes.

Devlin Design Group has posted a lengthy blog entry with behind-the-scenes details of the set project. We’ll have a SetStudio post of the new set soon.
