ABC News has announced a new desktop app called “Social Soundtracker” that lets viewers interact, in realtime, with streaming ABC News content.

The desktop app, announced today, will be getting a mobile version next month.

By combining a video pane with emoticon buttons, the app lets viewers quickly and easily respond to the content being watched and share those reactions with friends watching the same content. The app will also aggregate everyone’s emoticon votes and play sounds that match those emotions.

ABC News also said it plans to monitor user responses in an non-identifiable manner.

The app will only be linked to ABC News content streamed via its website, but will expand to other content in the future.
