NBCUniversal officially broke ground on its new “NBC Boston Media Center” Thursday, Aug. 16, 2018.
The 160,000-square foot facility, which is slated for completion in the fall of 2019, will house nearly 400 employees from the company’s NBC O&O station, WBTS, Telemundo O&O affiliate WNEU, cable news channel NECN and NBC Sports Boston.
WBTS, WNEU and NECN currently already share a facility in Needham.
Lee Kennedy Construction as well as Gardiner & Theobald Construction and architecture, design, planning and consulting firm Gensler are all part of the project to transform the former General Dynamics site into a modern broadcast facility outfitted with a total of six studios.
The building is being designed with energy efficient features and is also slated to contain open access spaces, quite and focus rooms, mothering rooms, a medical room and cafe break room and coffee bars.
Also planned are two courtyards and fitness facility.
NBC Universal also released two renderings of the facade of the new building, which shows what appears to be a glassed-in lobby with prominent NBC peacock and Telemundo logos and a partially floating header element with dimensional lettering reading “NBC Boston Media Center” lettering perched on top.
The NBC Boston Media Center joins multiple other high profile NBCUniversal facility projects over the past few years, including The Brokaw News Center in Los Angeles that houses KNBC and KVEA, the network’s O&O NBC and Telemundo stations.
NBC has also built facilities for duos of its owned NBC and Telemundo affiliates across the country, including The Studios at DFW in Dallas–Fort Worth (KXAS and KXTX), and other new modern news facilities in West Hartford (WVIT and WRDM) and San Diego (KNSD, KUAN).
Other projects include facilities for Telemundo O&Os in Denver (KDEN), San Antonio, Texas (KVDA) and McAllen, Texas (KTLM),
In Philadelphia, O&Os WCAU and Telemundo 62 (WWSI) move to their new state-of-the-art news center within the new Comcast Technology Center this fall.
