NBC Chicago, Telemundo news VP to be inducted into Hispanic journalism group’s hall of fame

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists has announced that Sally Ramirez, the senior vice president for news at WMAQ and WSNS in Chicago, will be part of its 2026 class of inductees into the NAHJ Hall of Fame.

“I am deeply honored and humbled to be inducted into the NAHJ Hall of Fame,” said Ramirez in a statement. “NAHJ represents a legacy of journalists who have expanded opportunity, elevated coverage, and insisted that our communities be seen and heard with depth, accuracy, and truth. This recognition belongs to the mentors who opened doors, the colleagues who challenged me, and the journalists, both past and present, who continue pushing our industry forward and building what comes next.”

The NAHJ Hall of Fame is dedicated to recognizing journalists who have played a role in advancing Latinos in broadcast news. 

“Throughout her decorated career, Sally’s vision has shaped journalists, strengthened newsrooms, and ensured our communities always receive the thoughtful, trusted reporting they deserve,” said Kevin Cross, president and general manager of NBCUniversal Local Chicago, in the statement. “Being welcomed into the NAHJ Hall of Fame not only reflects Sally’s extraordinary achievements, but also the profound influence she continues to have on journalism across the local and national landscape.”

“Sally’s dedicated leadership and passion for journalism has served communities, inspired newsrooms and developed considerable talent throughout her impressive career in local and national news,” said Jose Cancela, president of Telemundo Station Group, in the statement. “Her induction into the NAHJ Hall of Fame is a very deserved recognition of the transformative impact she has made and for her commitment to our industry and its people.”

Ramirez has been working at NBCUniversal Local Chicago since 2023, when she was brought back to her hometown to help restructure and lead the newsroom operations for NBC 5 Chicago and Telemundo Chicago.

Ramirez has over 30 years of experience in broadcast journalism at the local and national levels.

Before her role in Chicago, Ramirez worked for CNBC as the executive producer of “The News with Shepard Smith.” This included collaborating with news outlets across the NBCUniversal News Group. During this time, the broadcast notably became the first NBCU newscast to leverage content from all properties and platforms into a single newscast, according to the announcement. CNBC and select other former members of the NBCU News Group are now part of Versant.

Prior to joining CNBC, Ramirez headed up the news operation at KHOU in Houston, Texas, from 2016 to 2020. This tenure included overhauling newsroom culture and increasing digital and cross-platform content. She also lead the newsroom through the devastation of Hurricane Harvey, which required relocating to a temporary facility after the station’s former home was destroyed — all while still providing extensive coverage of the storm and its aftermath. 

She also worked as an executive producer and news director at KGW in Portland, Oregon, as well as time at other outlets across the country, including serving as an executive producer at WGN in Chicago.

Prior to her life-changing stint in Houston, Ramirez spent 17 years as Executive Producer, then Assistant News Director at KGW-TV in Portland, Ore. Earlier, she held several editorial and management positions across the country, including as Executive Producer at Chicago’s WGN-TV.

Ramirez, who is a bilingual, first-generation Mexican-American, has been honored with a series of other awards, including five Edward R. Murrow Awards, four Emmy Awards and the Alfred I. du-Pont-Columbia University Award, among others. She was also recognized with the “Chicago Latina of the Year” in 2025.

She grew up in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood and is a graduate of Whitney M. Young Magnet High School before earning her bachelor’s degree in communications at DePaul University. She would go on to receive a Distinguished Alumni Award from DePaul’s Center for Journalism Integrity & Excellence.

NBCU colleague José Díaz-Balart will also be part of Ramirez’s class alongside San Francisco Chronicle photo and video journalist Carlos Avila Gonzalez and PBS Public Editor Ricardo Sandoval-Palos. 

All three will be honored at the NAHJ Hall of Fame Gala on Saturday, July 25, 2026, during the 2026 NAHJ Conference & Expo in New Orleans.

La Asociación Nacional de Periodistas Hispanos (NAHJ, por sus siglas en inglés) ha anunciado la clase 2026 de su Salón de la Fama, y Sally Ramírez, Vicepresidenta Senior de Noticias de NBC 5 Chicago (WMAQ-TV) / Telemundo Chicago (WSNS-TV), ha sido seleccionada como una de las distinguidas homenajeadas de este año.

El Salón de la Fama de NAHJ reconoce a periodistas pioneros cuya dedicación y contribuciones han allanado el camino para los latinos en la industria. Al honrar un legado de excelencia, el Salón de la Fama celebra a personas que han dejado una huella duradera a través de su trabajo, mentoría y compromiso con una cobertura precisa y representativa de las comunidades latinas.
