CNN to host California governor debate

CNN will host a debate between California gubernatorial candidates Xavier Becerra and Steve Hilton on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2026, from its Los Angeles studios.

The one-hour debate will begin at 6 p.m. PT/9 p.m. ET, with CNN anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash serving as moderators. It will air live on CNN, CNN International and CNN en Español and stream for CNN subscribers.

Becerra, a Democrat, and Hilton, a Republican, advanced from California’s June primary to compete in the November general election.

CNN said candidates invited to participate must meet California’s requirements to run for governor and have raised, contributed or loaned at least $1 million to their campaigns.

Candidates also must have received at least 15% support among registered or likely voters in two polls meeting CNN’s polling standards. Qualifying polls must have been released on or after June 3.

The debate will also be available live through CNN.com and the network’s connected TV and mobile apps for streaming and pay TV subscribers, with an on-demand version available after the event.
