2009’s best set designs
2009 was a challenging year for the television news business and it’s no question that was reflected in the set design industry.
Combined with the bad economy and end of the first wave of HD newscast conversions, there were significantly less sets going in around the country.
New KTLA set combines contemporary, traditional looks

The set has an anchor desk fronted by three panels embedded in a metal-toned curved structure. Flanking this are bright white lighted boxes and the desk is topped with a sleek glass top.
The backgrounds include a camera center rear projection screen and large swathes of printed graphics based on the graphics package.

Roaming RTNDA

RTNDA@NAB Show floor was sparsely populated with exhibitors. Photo: Dak Dillon/NewscastStudio
Although NewscastStudio is taking an alternative approach to coverage this year, we did take some time Monday to visit the set, graphics and lighting companies at the RTNDA@NAB convention exhibit floor in the Hilton Pavilion.
On the set design side were FX Group, Broadcast Design International, Park Place Studio, Devlin Design Group and Erector Sets. Graphics was limited to just VDO, while music companies included 615 Music, Non-Stop Music and newcomer Aircast Music.
Noticeably absent were Stephen Arnold Music and Inergi, though Stephen Arnold had a small booth on the NAB side and retained some involvement with RTNDA.
NBC10 Investigates: Going inside the studio

Philadelphia’s WCAU-TV has an entertaining video clip on its newly rebranded site, NBCPhiladelphia.com that takes viewers on a hard-hitting, behind the scenes “investigation” into the station’s new set.
Though the video’s premise gets a little old after the first few moments, it’s still a creative attempt to generate some buzz around the station’s new look and switch to HD.

WJAC-TV in Johnstown sporting new look
New site TVNewsInsider tipped us off that WJAC-TV, the NBC affiliate in Johnstown, Pa., has a new set.
The new set was designed by FX Group, and is similar to ones already installed at WFTV-TV in Orlando, Fla., KIRO-TV in Seattle and WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Using a combination of wood and silver and blue highlights, the new set is full of clean lines and reflects the simplified look Cox stations tend to favor in both their sets and graphics.
Some new additions, however, include a new take on the weather presentation desk (WFTV-TV and WPXI-TV both elected to keep their existing weather centers designed by BDI) and a curved standup area with plasma screen. Another new touch is the station’s logo emblazoned on plexiglass panels that are mounted to the wall.
