AP finally activates Twitter, Facebook to help cover Haiti quake
The Associated Press has finally hopped on the social media bandwagon, flipping the switch on its Facebook and Twitter profiles to aid in covering the devastating earthquakes in Haiti.
As of this morning, the Twitter account was at about 3,600 followers, while the Facebook page had just over 1,000 fans.
It’s interesting to note the timing of the launches — was AP planning to launch these around this time already and decided to use this big story as a good jumping off point? Or maybe AP management was waiting for a “big” news story? It’s also worth noting the launches come on the heels of the end of Google’s hosting of AP stories.

‘Today’ updates Twitter background

NBC’s “Today Show” has a new Twitter page background. The new look includes several 3D “sunrise arches” floating in front of a whispy cloudscape. Also added is a the show’s new image campaign slogan: “Your Day is Today.”
The page still doesnt’ fix the issue of users with extremely large screens seeing a jarring cut-off on the edges of the background, as we’ve lamented before.
NewscastTip: Twitter tips to launch, enhance your use of the service
Twitter has slowly but surely been sneaking its way into every aspect of our lives and TV news is no exception.
Some stations have started Twitter accounts for the newsroom or individual anchors and reporters, though it’s not always the actual person behind the posts.
Tools like HootSuite (which just came out with a new version) and CoTweet let multiple people manage the same Twitter account, meaning you won’t have to share a password with everyone in the newsroom and risk having your account exposed.
Station adds personality to tweets with sidebar graphic

KOMU-TV, the NBC affiliate serving the Columbia/Jefferson City market has updated its Twitter page background to include a list of the people feeding the station’s Twitter feed, complete with each person’s Twitter handle and initials used to sign his or her tweet.
Since the station is owned by the University of Missouri, most of the folks feeding KOMU’s Twitter timeline are students, but it’s quite easy to envision reporters’ or other staff member photos here instead.
This approach works well because it not only allows Twitter readers to see who’s behind the posts they read, but also serves as a cross-promotion tool to get the public to follow other feeds.
MSNBC adds account list to side of Twitter pages

MSNBC has added a list of its various Twitter accounts to the side of its main Twitter pages. The list is broken into three broad categories: one for its various news feeds, one for personalities and one for shows.
It also appears this Twitter page has been set up correctly so the background doesn’t repeat on extremely large screens, something we noted in an earlier post. It’s interesting to note that David Shuster’s account hasn’t been updated (he used to use “Shuster1600” but users visiting that page are told “David’s real #twitter account is @DavidShuster. sorry for the confusion,” a change obviously brought on by the end of the “1600 Pennsylvania Avenue” show.
We also note that at least one MSNBC personality who tweets is missing: anchor Alex Witt.
WFLD-TV prepares for HD launch

A tipster sent us this picture from Nancy Loo’s TwitPic account showing the new FOX Chicago, WFLD-TV, set. The set, by Blyth, is the FOX O&O standard set. The set has been customized with the FOX Chicago brand instead of the usual FOX and channel number brand, as WFLD-TV goes by FOX Chicago instead of FOX 32.
Watch for the debut sometime soon, along with news in HD.
