Comcast, the owner of NBCUniversal, has announced plans for a smaller facility on the West Coast that will essentially replace the 1.5 million square-foot MetroStudios@Lankershim project it canceled.

The new facility will be located on the Universal Studios lot and will encompass some 150,000 square feet.

Scheduled for completion in 2013, a large portion of the space will be devoted to a shared newsroom for KNBC-TV, Telemundo, Spanish-language KVEA-TV and NBC News.

“The L.A. bureau is so vitally important to this news division. The increased coordination with our KNBC family will ensure that we are positioned smartly and strategically for the future,” said NBC News president Steve Capus, in a statement released by the network.

The facility will also include offices, studios, production areas and a distribution center.
