Coverage notes: News and sports events to look out for in 2018

2. FIFA World Cup in Russia

June 14 – July 15

The year ahead is not just host to the Olympics but also soccer’s biggest event, the quadrennial FIFA World Cup.

Hosted by Russia, the event will feature a month of soccer across the country, ending in the final championship game at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. The United States Men’s National Team will not participate in the World Cup after losing a qualifying match this fall.

Broadcast-wise, Fox Sports has the exclusive U.S. English rights to the World Cup, with 350 hours of programming planned across Fox, FS1 and FS2, including more matches on broadcast TV than the last four World Cups combined. Fox is also going all-out on the ground in Russia with multiple studios including a setup in Moscow’s historic Red Square.

Telemundo will provide comprehensive Spanish language coverage with over 500 hours on Telemundo and Universo. Outside of the U.S., a variety of broadcasters will showcase the games, including BBC, NRK, NOS, TF1 and Globo.

We all remember the pomp and circumstance last time around, with special editions of “Today” and “Good Morning America” covering the wedding in real time. This time, that’s likely to be amplified further on the U.S. networks.

BBC will also provide comprehensive coverage of the pageantry and ceremonies.
