Aaron Gilchrist will return to NBC 4 Washington, WRC, in January 2027 as an evening anchor after nearly six years with NBC News, where he anchored NBC News Now.

Gilchrist will anchor the station’s 6, 7:30 and 11 p.m. newscasts beginning Jan. 4, according to an internal announcement from Mike Goldrick, vice president of news for NBC 4 and Telemundo 44 Washington.

The move follows the retirement announcement of longtime NBC 4 anchor Jim Handly earlier in October.

Gilchrist previously spent nearly nine years as a morning anchor at NBC 4 before leaving in December 2020 to join NBC News Now.

During his time at the network, Gilchrist covered the White House and traveled internationally with the president, including assignments in Berlin and Angola. His reporting also focused on military service members, veterans and their families.

“I’m proud of the stories we were able to tell about our service members, veterans and their families. We did reporting on their talents, their struggles, their sacrifices and their triumphs. We went to France in 2021 with soldiers who had guarded the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington over the years as they marked the Tomb’s 100 anniversary where it all started after World War I. It was such a privilege to be able to document that journey and share the reverence and gratitude I witnessed from our vets and the French people,” Gilchrist said in comments shared in the internal announcement.

Before joining NBC 4, Gilchrist worked at WWBT in Richmond, Virginia, where he began anchoring while attending Virginia Commonwealth University.

Gilchrist will join an evening anchor team that includes Eun Yang, Shawn Yancy and Erika Gonzalez.

Goldrick said Gilchrist was also interested in returning to field reporting and covering stories across the Washington metropolitan area.
