Networks go all in for Hurricane Matthew coverage

Over at “NBC Nightly News,” meanwhile, with anchor Lester Holt on the ground, the broadcast used a modified open that made use of its “Hurricane Matthew” logo before transitioning to its normal look.

NBC News‘ Matthew logo featured italicized text in a bold red box accented with darker maroons and purples and angled slightly to match the angle of the letters.

The logo appeared throughout the show’s extended tease, animating between the tilted box and “Nightly News” logo.

Like CBS, NBC also utilized imagery with fact boxes over them, though its graphics were coordinated with the special Hurricane Matthew logo design.

Also like CBS, NBC also used a multibox design to showcase its correspondents. Behind them, a blue and green background with grid pattern is visible.

Along with the multibox, “Nightly” also used an animated map that featured an inset showcasing reporter locations and city labels again coordinated with the logo.

Overall, NBC’s graphics were the best coordinated of the big three networks and also did a good job of keeping the look easy to read. The look also did a good job of staying close to the network’s normal look while still being distinct enough to highlight the special coverage.
