WCVB’s “Chronicle” is the nation’s longest-running locally produced newsmagazine program, featuring life in New England.

The biggest challenge in creating a virtual set for this historic program was designing a scenic storytelling environment that not only featured expanded performance areas but also ensured the set felt warm and intimate to engage the loyal audience.

Launched in 2024, the new virtual set was designed to blend virtual and physical, not to “look virtual.”

The “physical” includes the home base, an oval riser topped with a custom desk. The “virtual” studio wraps around the desk and features different performance areas for “video displays,” allowing producers to customize each story. Talent can easily move around the studio on elevated platforms, adding realism to the VR set.
