The redesigned banners for each tease are now done in either white and orange or, in the case of breaking news, white and red, and also feature the show’s “sunrise” icon to the right in its own colored box.
In addition, the show’s last three teases, which are shorter, are now grouped together in a three-pane “filmstrip” animation effect that serves as a transition between ehac one.
For the main part of the open, “Today” uses a similar sounding announcer and musical cut, but eliminates the 3D animation of Rockefeller Plaza in favor of stylized photographs and video clips of the building’s exterior and iconic flags.
The new look is features larger typography for Kotb and Savannah Guthrie’s names, which now include the sunrise icon to the right as well.
Unlike the previous version of the open, this part also eliminates the ring shaped segments in favor of rectangles and lines that slide across the screen.
It’s also worth noting that the new open places the NBC News logo and “Today” logo onscreen slightly before the voiceover announces them, a move that gives them a bit more screen time.
Due to school closings airing locally on Jan. 8, the video capture of the new open NewscastStudio posted was letterboxed and slightly cropped. For a fullscreen look at the second day’s open watch this clip:
