Oscars get big update with swaths of LED ribbons, video walls

The video walls were particularly powerful during the on stage musical performances littered throughout the telecasts.

For the performance of “Into the Unknown” from “Frozen 2,” seemingly floating light up diamonds — or fractals if you will — were brought out on stage.

One performer was perched behind the LED “feather” with Idina Menzel on stage closer to the audience amid the diamonds.

At one point during the performance, bursts of “frost” shot from stage right to left and then seemingly continued into the header above the stage.

During “I’m Standing With You,” performed by “Breakthrough” star Chrissy Metz, not only did the circular cylinder element rise to reveal Metz, but the name and writer’s name appeared to “ripple” away with a watery effect — a nod to the film’s plot.

Als0, during Cynthia Erivo’s performance of “Stand Up” from “Harriet,” a line of background singers stood just behind the “feather,” sloping down to follow its shape. The video wall later featured a giant image of Harriet Tubman, whose life the movie is based on.

The other songs performed that evening also took full advantage of the plentiful LED.
