KPIX, the CBS-owned station serving the San Francisco Bay Area, has rolled out revised branding for its streaming channel, expanding its geography to cover all of Northern California.

Previously branded as CBS News Bay Area, the station rolled out CBS News NorCal with a secondary tagline, “Sea to Sierra,” in the bug earlier this week. The tag represents the expanse the broadcaster covers, from San Francisco on the Pacific Ocean to the Sierra National Forest and Yosemite National Park inland.

The streaming channel now airs combined programming from KPIX and fellow CBS-owned station KOVR in Sacramento.

During segments, a map appears indicating which area the broadcast is currently focused on, displaying text including “on now Bay Area, up next Sacramento Area.” During stream breaks, the feed shows a mix of KPIX and KOVR talent with CBS News NorCal b-roll.

The rebrand follows Scott Warren, vice president and general manager of both KPIX and KOVR, taking on oversight of the Sacramento station.

The rebrand to CBS News NorCal is a test to gauge viewer response before any further decisions or adjustments, according to a person familiar with the matter.

California spans approximately 770 miles from its northern border with Oregon to its southern border with Mexico, making it one of the largest states by land area in the contiguous United States. The San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose designated market area, which KPIX serves, ranks among the top 10 largest DMAs in the country. The Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto DMA, served by KOVR, ranks separately and covers much of California’s Central Valley.

The two cities sit roughly 90 miles apart, connected by Interstate 80. Despite their proximity, they have historically operated as distinct advertising and media markets.

On linear television, KPIX continues to use KPIX and CBS News Bay Area branding, with no changes planned.

CBS has continued to test and tweak the branding of its owned stations, along with the branding of its streaming offerings. After relaunching KCBS as KCAL News in 2023, the station dropped the branding in favor of CBS News Los Angeles in fall 2025. In Texas, meanwhile, KTVT in Dallas–Fort Worth brands itself as CBS News Texas.
